There are so many great minds on here, please assist if you can.
I just started working on a 5 year old yesterday who was diagnosed at birth w/macrocephaly, low muscle tone, and no deep tendon reflexes. She was given PT from about 4mos-8mos and then the drs said no use, she would never be able to walk.
Hogwash! She walks just fine, although she is a little pigeon-toed, and she has normal intellect. n my first session I used PNF to assess what kind of strength she has. She was very cooperative. She feels no pain. She has in the past had multiple dislocations in her shoulders and wrists and doesn't feel it. Does anyone have experience w/a case like this, or suggestions for working on her? I would love to be able to improve her circumstances.
Laura,
I have a current massage student who's daughter was born with simular things and she is now walking, talking, going to school, riding her bike... She would love to share her info and help with your client as she has done with her daughter. Let me know if that would help you - sent you a "FRIEND' message. Best wishes -
Laura,
I am Mrs. Yates' student, my daughter was born with Cerebral Palsy, she's a left-sided hemi. We were told that she would not walk. Well, not only does my daughter walk, she can run, skip, hop, jump, and she even standson one foot at a time more difficult on her weak side of course. I have come to the conclusion that with determination that a child can do what ever he/she put their mind to. Amy's gait is off and she wears an AFO, her left arm is adducted up and into her thoracic cavity, however with some reminding she does use it as a helper hand. The tone of all of her muscles on the left side is lower than that of her right.
Amy decided about two weeks ago to do something that a hemi "isn't supposed" to do and that was she took her training wheel off her bike and took off riding and to this day has NOT put them back on. My daughter is an inspiration to me and she doesn't even realize it. If you would like any help please let me know I am willing to help out any way that I can. I am a newbie to massage thereapy as to my daughter is my reason why I decided this path instead of PTA or OTA, I wanted to give her something different to look forward to as far as therapy goes.
I don't have any treatment suggestions but just wanted to suggest that this sounds like a great opportunity to do a case report for the MTF! ;) While you certainly cannot determine cause/effect with a case report, you might uncover some useful information that could help other therapists and patients/clients with macrocephaly. Good luck!
