What Did You Do Before Massage?




I know, I'm nosey. I was a travel writer.

 

For six years, I got to travel to Bed & Breakfasts and get massages, all for free, and write about it. So my roots are in traveling, meeting people and hearing their stories. Now I travel around and do The World Massage Festival & Massage Therapy Hall of Fame.

I found the adjustment to a single location massage establishment, inside a strip mall, very confining. So I started a way to stay "in the massage world and travel!" But that is another story!

What's your story? What did you do before massage? Tell us of your travels and what massage is like where you are, especially if you massage outside the U.S. We really like pictures, if possible.

I was an emergency medical technician for about eight years, also worked in a hospital. LOVE to make people feel better, and LOVE to help people in a -now-comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable way! I think working on lots of patients helped me feel very comfortable with performing massage.

I've been in practice for a little over five years now, and to a degree, yes, they've helped. People who make a fairly serious hobby of musicianship appreciate the fact that I know where they're coming from on multiple levels, and it is very nice to be able to produce my own correspondence and advertising materials with minimal help.

I worked in many machine shops over 35 years, became the go to person for everything. First took massage classes in 1994. I always liked helping people it does me good when a client is glassy eyed when they get off the table.

Just before massage, I was a college student, returning to school in my mid-40s, graduating at age 49. Before that, I was a graphic artist for 27 years.

I started out cooking a local country club while in high school. I then moved on to running the front desk at a dry cleaning business. In college (Criminal Justice major) I worked inside our county jail as a Cadet doing mostly fingerprinting, DNA sample collection and filing work. I then moved onto Probation and worked as a Field Supervision Officer conducting random at home PBT's (breathalyzers) at the homes/work places of those on the Intensive Probation program... interesting job to say the least and I learned a great deal about how people work and the results of leading an unhealthy lifestyle(mainly drinking and drug abuse) but also the negative energy people carry with them. I am now in massage therapy school and looking to work in a chiropractic setting or possibly spa/independent setting, which ever works out best during internships most likely. Again, interesting to see where everyone has come from before massage! :)

I have been a Chemical Technician for 23 years and it is high time for a change! I've wanted to do something to help people. Becoming a Massage Therapist had been a 10 year dream of mine! I am now licensed in NY and Nationally Certified. I am slowly making the transition of going from full-time Chemical Technician to full-time Massage Therapist. It is slow going, but so worth it.

Hi Mike! I served as a journalist in the Navy for 8 years. I traveled all over the world and got to be a Sailor, which was great, and a journalist -- which really is the best job in the Navy. I went to massage school while I was on active duty so that I could launch a new career as a LMT. I enjoy the work so much and love being able to make a difference in people's lives everyday.

I was a court reporter for 12 years before I started massage school. In my teen years, I had wanted to be a neonatal nurse but was too afraid of needles to be placing them in newborns. After that, I didn't know what I was going to do, but I still knew I wanted to "help" people. Well, a court reporting advertisement came in the mail. I knew I could do this with my background of 6 years in piano and typing classes in high school. So, off I went, to "help" people. After years of burnouts and the continued desire to really help people, I decided, upon returning to my home state of Texas to go for massage!! I am so glad I did. Having been doing massage for more than 4 years now, I am anxious to learn more and help more...praying and searching for the specialized field now. How exciting and rewarding a "job" this is.
