What are the requirements for practicing massage in Canada? England? other European countries?

AMTA and ABMP have online resources (http://www.amtamassage.org/students.html and http://www.massagetherapy.com/careers/index.php) for those who want to pursue massage therapy in the U.S. Are there similar resources for pursuing massage therapy in other countries?

If you have practiced or are currently practicing massage therapy outside of the USA, could you please share information about:

  1. local/country regulations, if any
  2. educational requirements (hours/accreditation) for practicing massage therapy, if any
  3. professional settings where massage therapists work
  4. challenges that massage therapists face
  5. internet resources that offer additional information
  6. any other pertinent information that you care to share about your experience as massage therapist

Thank you,

Emmanuel

In Ireland many schools/centres offer training in holistic massage - ITEC (International Therapy Examination Council) is the main course provider. Once you have your Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology you can learn different holistic bodywork therapies and add to your initial training over the years. Many courses are run part-time (week-ends) over 6 to 12 months depending on the course so it's great for people currently employed.

In France, you can go to jail for giving a massage, I am not joking - Like in many other european countries there is no legislation for complementary and alternative therapies such as massage, reflexology etc ... only Physiotherapists can give massage in France and they sue anyone who dare to offer therapeutic massage or any other forms of massage! Would you believe!

Not quiet as bad, but yes, French are rather particular about their "chiro" and "relaxation massage" you may want to know law of the land before going in.
For EU if you don't have already friends on the ground good place to start hunting for jobs and credentials information would be http://ec.europa.eu/eures/home.jsp?lang=en
