Any thoughts on the following? we are planning to move to the Pacific NW. I was hoping to have been there this spring to start school but as luck would have it we will be delayed by at least half a year. There are two very good programs in Portland that I was considering but both are substantially longer and of course, I am already here in Miami. I have the option to simply go to Educating Hands and then sit hte MBLEX in Oregon. This would save me a lot of time and money overall in the general scheme of things and it would be nice to already be abe to start working. Can anyone give their thoughts on this?
    thanks
  • Gaelle Norlawi

Hi Laura, I would just sit in the MBLEX and go straight to work. You can always do further education later. Also, make sure you set up a free practice profile at www.WholeVisit.com, its actually the fastest way to get patients to find you in your new area and best of all, its free for practitioners like us. Check it out!
  • Franklin Miranda

    Hello all,

I would soon be relocating to florida state from New York. After obtaining my National certification along with my New York state license; I was wondering if anybody knows what other classes do I need to qualify for my Florida state Massage therapist License.
    Thank you
  • Frank Ansel

Franklin, to find your answer, go to the FL State Board of massage, http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/massage/, to get your answer. They are the board who accepts your creditionals for working in Florida.
  • Tamara L Luffy LMT, CNHP

Franklin, I relocated to florida from north a few years ago. My understanding is that because you already have your National cert, you can apply to the state. I was not Nationally certified at the time so I needed 1 class in hydrotherapies. I contacted a local school and was able to take it when I moved down.
  • Ruthellen Wood

Franklin depending on where in fL you wish to be you may want to get your credentials accepted then move and gwt your lic. afteryou get here. Community and tech colleges are the most likely to accept your credits and they charge far less for residents than for non residents. Personally I saved over $600 by being a resident.
  • Franklin Miranda

Thank you everyone for you help. It looks like it might be a lil stressful.I would be contacting Florida state board once I have my credentials. Then I shall take it from there. Once again thank you guys
  • Kelly Sanders, LMT

Hi all, I just joined this group because I now live in P C beach but do not practice massage here yet though I take the MBLX on May 6 and will apply for licensure then. If any of you near P C Beach (panama city) would like to do a trade, I'm right on the beach west end by carilon.
  • Kelly Sanders, LMT

After reading some other posts this is for Franklin, I'm only aware that if you are licensed elsewhere that license will transfer but you will need to take the HIV course.
  • Darcy Neibaur

Welcome Kelly to Florida. I am in Pensacola
  • Kelly Sanders, LMT

Thanks Darcy, I've been living here since Nov 11 but my Mom has been next door since 1989, so I'm quite familiar with the area. I will see you in June.

I am a massage therapist in Lakeland Florida. I will be relocating to Colorado sometime in August/September of this year. I am looking for someone to take over my practice. It has been affected by the economy but still very good clients. I have my own office (nicely painted by one of my clients) on the southside..Rent is VERY reasonable. I would prefer a therapist that also does reflexology and energy healing as this is what my clients are looking for. Let me know if you are interested of know of anyone who has these skills.
  • Barbara Burgess

Robin, where is Lakeland? I live in the Villages. I am big time into Reflexology. Could you send more information?

What would you do, if someone walking in to your massage studio with his/her resume to hire him/her, you asking for an interwiev/sample massage to se what he/she got and the person asking you to pay for his/her time and massage?
  • Robin Wiggs

I'm thinking about this one because i'm in a new situation (and a new town/state) I am an experienced therapist and while I understand the desire to know what a therapist can do if you are hiring them....I also understand the need to value your work and time...and not to give it away for free. I personally would not object to 20 minutes or so. If you hire at a restaurant, you don't wait tables before you're hired..if you work in customer service you don't work a day for free to see what you can do. Someone fresh out of school I can understand, just to see their potential, however,If your license and insurance is in order (you can check that easily online)... you can even ask for references from prior clients. It's not black and white in my opinion. That's from being on both sides of the issue at different times. How about making a deal? If your work is worth paying for, you pay them....both sides benefit.
  • Darcy Neibaur

An interview with Massage Envy consists of a formal interview plus a 50 minute hands on massage demonstating different strokes, pressure, draping, etc. It is not paid.
  • JB Harding, III LMT A.A.S.

Moving to Jacksonville, Florida in a couple of months, and I am looking for a little info on the massage industry in Jacksonville and surrounding cities. I have never been to Florida and taking a leap of faith and a great need for change of environment from the Midwest (Saint Louis, MO). Any advice or info would be helpful. What is the average going rate for massage in Florida anyway... Thank you my fellow MT's and Bodyworkers.
