Lower Michigan Massage therapists

To be able to connect, ask advice and possibly trade services
  • Bill Cahalan

I'm from Royal Oak! and you?
  • Marilyn St.John

Originally from Royal Oak (about a thousand years ago) and now in Oakland Twp. & Shelby. Who else is out there?
  • Darcy Neibaur

I was born and raised in Jackson, MI. I now live in Pensacola, FL. I still have family in Jacson so I am up there once every year or two.
  • Joan Osterhouse

I live in Kalamazoo/Portage area. I would love to trade with someone regularly.
  • Marilyn St.John

Joan, I drive to & from Chicago periodically, and I would love to trade occasionally. I anticipate making the trip twice (well, there-and-back) every week or two next Spring when my daugher goes back to work after her maternity leave. I'm fairly familiar with the K'zoo area since she also attended WMU.
  • Colin McConnell

I live in Macomb but work in Mt. Clemens
  • Bill Cahalan

I have not yet taken the National Cert test because I graduated in April and Mich has established a board but no decision as to the testing criteria has been made. I can't afford to take a test we won't be using. How do you all feel about the testing?
  • Darcy Neibaur

So Bill where does that leave you at this point? Are you able to practice as a MT?
  • Marilyn St.John

I'm in the boat with Bill, I guess. MI has NO regulations (except for the local ones) that have been implemented for massage therapists, it will be wonderful when they finally get their legislative act together. I have met quite a few people doing this work don't see it as a career, simply as an idea to make a quick buck on the side. Most of the people in my graduating class didn't even bother to finish the required hours & actually get the certificate. I'm taking the National anyhow because I would like to be able to practice in Illinois & South Carolina & they do require it. Some sort of reciprocity would be nice, maybe that will happen someday down the road for us.
  • Marilyn St.John

...So Bill, are you practicing there in RO right now?
  • Bill Cahalan

I am practicing you guys. Darcy we can practice as a CMT and will probably be grandfathered in when Michigan gets around to licensing.
Ya, Marilyn I will most likely take the NCTMB too. It looks good and can help if I travel. I massage at Irish dance competitions and many are out of state. At this point I have only done work at Michigan competitions, though.
  • Colin McConnell

ahh the ol grandfather in.... i hope it is a for sure thing
  • Joan Osterhouse

Marilyn, I would love to trade with you also. Let me know when you will be coming through and we can arrange a trade at my studio. If you want to talk on the phone ( it is faster since I don't get on the computer every day) call 269-779-2084
  • Marilyn St.John

Joan ~ I look forward to it. Until Spring it won't be often, but after January (weather permitting) I plan to make the trip fairly often. I'll plan to get in touch with you in advance. Thanks! ~m

Hi, I got my NCTMB as soon as I could after graduation in Sept '04 because at the time it was the only certification available at the time and was considered the "gold standard" by those states that did regulate. For a long time, I was dual-licensed in both Livonia and Farmington, but that got to be rather expensive and tedious to maintain. I currently hold a massage facility license in Farmington where I have a private office for my massage therapy and doula business. I think it will help when Michigan's state regulation takes effect, since we will be able to practice in all cities freely, however, unless I am mistaken, we may still have to pay those pesky facility fees.

At any rate, I love what I do and will continue to work as long as I can. I am so grateful to have this forum to connect with other therapists in the area.

In answer to Colin's question: I have been very fortunate, although I no longer maintain a waiting list for most of my appointments. Prior to the economy tanking, I would frequently book out fully 1-2 months in advance. Now I sometimes find I have several openings still available each week.
I have great faith, though, that as healthcare costs rise, people in the area will recognize that massage therapy is a fundamental part of preventative care.

Hello everyone. I stay quite busy I work full time as a RN and have a home office in which I provide therapeutic massage. I am always interested in exchanging massages with other therapists. I get one massage a month, but could use more.

Hello everyone. I am just starting out with my massage career. I am finding it really hard to get clients. I am living in Kalamazoo. Does anyone have any tips on how to gain more clients or if you know anyone in the area that is looking for a massage therapist. I would be happy with whatever you wonderful people can offer. Thank You.
