Dr. Jeanette Norden is a neuroscientist, Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology in the School of Medicine, and Professor of Neurosciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at Vanderbilt University.
She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology, with training in Neurobiology and Clinical Neurology, from Vanderbilt University. She completed postdoctoral training at Duke University, the National Institute for Medical Research in London, and Vanderbilt School of Medicine.
Professor Norden is also the Director of Medical Education in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Her innovative approach in integrating “humanity” into basic science courses has been recognized at Vanderbilt and nationally.
Dr. Norden has twice won the Shovel Award, given by the graduating class to the faculty member who has had the most positive influence on them in their four years of medical school. She has received several other teaching awards, including the Jack Davies Award for teaching excellence in the basic sciences, the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, and the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Association of American Medical Colleges. She was the first recipient of both the Teaching Excellence Award given by the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the University Chair of Teaching Excellence at Vanderbilt.
We study the anatomy of muscle tendon and ligament but what of the nervous system ? Although this is nerve surgery I found it very interesting to see how these nerves can be repaired by a skilled and innovative surgeon. The commentary my be surgeon speak but the graphics are stunning, welcome to the world of nerves ! we are working with these every time we touch someone !
Wow how amazingly generous ! Gil hedley has just uploaded his 4 dvd series to you tube. $160 worth for free. Am sure you will find these disection lectures of interest. I will be uploading these to the main A+P page for you to enjoy thankyou GIL Hedley.
Hi Jeff and Amanda wouldn't it be fantastic if he did "let go" like Gil :)
On a personal note I have discovered a huge imbalance in my education in that I have not studied the brain and nervous system enough. So beginning from Oct 2012 having studied DERMONEUROMODULATION many of the vids and other material will reflect this. I hope you enjoy this material and will ask of yourselves do I know enough about nerves?
You may be both interested in the work of Dr. Geoffrey Bove. Google him!
He will be giving a two day course about pain and the nervous system in Berkeley, CA this fall at the Rosen Institute.
He is a Doctor of Chiropractic who specializes in pain disorders and has written numerous articles about nerves. Let me know if you need help finding him.
i've only had a short time to watch the beginning of the video Stephen and I can't wait to watch the whole thing. my favorite structure to study of the nervous system is the eye, including the optic nerve of course. i'm working a general theory of eye pathology along with specific specific pathologies, including glaucoma which I am preparing to do some research to see if my assumptions are correct and to explore the potential for manual and movement therapies in the prevention and rehab related to the eye. speaking of research, Amanda's reference to Geoff Bove who is on the leading edge of fascia research and was very instrumental in the Int'l Fascia Research Congress too. He and Susan Chappelle have done some great stuff. I wish I could attend his presentation in Berkeley. Here's a link to them as presenters last year in Vancouver: http://www.fasciacongress.org/2012/panelists.html
NERVE SURGERY Notice how she deliberately injures the nerve to encourage nerve sprouting and regeneration . at 32.45 into this video.
Q Is this an indicator that micro injury to periferal nerves actually induces stronger recovery. " motor nerves will not recover without injury " Does it therefore follow that deep tissue techniques eg muscle stripping or temporary compression, are "good for nerves "
This video shows last resort nerve decompression surgery. These have provided confirmation of specific carpal tunnel sites that I target when treating Dupuytrens Contracture. My hunch is this enhances axoplasmic flow = healthy nerve= correct myofibroblastic behaviour.

Thank you for the nerve injury and repair videos Stephen~
Cannot wait to view them! I own a set of Acklund videos and they are valuable learning tools, as is the book Trail Guide to the Body.

By the way, registration for Fall 2013 workshops and trainings in Hendrickson Method Manual Therapy is open.
Really good technique for peripheral nerve entrapment. Giles Gamble, Senior Teacher, will be teaching workshops in the U.K. this fall and spring.

Jeff have you been studying axoplasmic flow ? I have only recently been investigating and wish I had learned more about it years ago !

I highly recomend this book and DVD set from Jean Claude Guimberteau
He has condensed his life work into a book with accompanying DVD. It promotes as many questions as it answere's because it challanges the world of microbiology as never seen before.
If you wish to explore the universe inside you and your clients this is vital education.
