Hey Frank. Work has been ok since 4th not busy but not too slow. Noticing that there have been a few topics in main discussions that center around massage specials to bring in clients in the slower months. Is summer generally a slower time?

No, its not hard. I believe it was 20 05 25 questions, I can't remeber, geez has it been 5 1/2 yrs? wow. They are asking about the Massage laws of Louisiana. Did you attend the "Louisiana Institute of massage therapy" ? if so, you should have gotten a copy of the laws. Spend a week looking over the laws, and you will be ok. Trust me, that was an easy exam.
Hey Molly. Ken is correct it is about 20 to 25 questions on the Louisiana Law. Email me at mbreaux@hotmail.com and I will send you a copy of our school's study guide for the Oral Exam.
i was on another website and someone mentioned that in their state it is a law that gift certificates last only 2 yrs. Do we have a similar law here in louisiana where GCs have to expire withing a certain time frame
Is your CE approved by the Louisiana Massage Board? If not, then you probably need to state so in your notice - it's part of our law here in LA that you have to state specifically that your CE is approved or not approved. Being approved by NCBTMB means nothing as far as our state license renewal goes and there have been lots of angry therapists and lawsuits against those who sold CEs without following the requirement. You can check out the Rules and Regs at www.LABMT.org or contact our board for help getting your CE approved. Good luck!
For the most part and from experience, a class that is approved by NCBTMB will most likely be approved by the state. I did my homework and found this out directly from NCBTMB.
Hi there. I am a NCBTMB provider and is true that in most states if you are a NCBTMB provider you are covered. States such as Louisana, Texas, and Florida need approval from their state board. Go through all states and call the stat boards to see what you need for that state. I know it was a lot if paperwork with NCBTMB but sometimes more paperwork is needed for the states. :-(
I wish you much sucess with Pediatric Massage!
Karina Braun
Hey Kim, no I'm not interested in Pediatric Massage, I've been a deep tissue practitioner for 20 years and there's not much demand for torturing children...
I just wanted to reiterate what Karina said. NCBTMB may be missinforming you. There is a whole separate procedure to be approved in Louisiana. It does involve paperwork and a an extra cost, but please if you post an add here in a section for Louisiana therapists, you really need to post that your CE is not approved for LA CE credit as required by Louisiana Law. I don't teach CE courses, so I'm not some competitor, just a former LA Board Member trying to keep you out of potential trouble. To get your course approved, go to www.labmt.org
Below are the quoted sections from the LA Massage Rules and Regs regarding continuing education classes, required languaging, and penalties for misuse. We really need good CE providers in this state and I'm sure your program will be approved, but if you don't go through the appropriate channels, you may end up inadvertently shooting yourself in the foot and become ineligible for approval. Let me know if I can help. Again, good luck!
E. Providers must have approval, in writing, from the
board before disseminating any notices that their program is

does advertise approval by the board and approval has not
been granted in writing, that the provider may be subject to a

application for approval of continuing education programs
by that provider will be considered for approval. The fine

considered for any future programs by that provider.
J. Statement as to Approval
1. The provider of a program approved for Louisiana
CEU units may announce or indicate in advertising,
promotional and other materials as follows :
"Approved by the Louisiana Board of Massage

No other statement regarding Louisiana CEU approval may
be made in advertising, promotional and/or other materials,
included but not limited to, a statement that an application
has been to the board for approval or that the provider
intends to apply for approval.
2. Providers may offer programs that are not approved
pursuant to this Section. However, if a provider offers a
program for which approval is not sought, or for which
approval has been denied, the provider must announce in all
advertising, promotional and other materials concerning the
Regarding Gift Certificates, my understanding is that in Louisiana there is NO expiration allowed on Gift Certificates, that they can be redeemed as long as the company that sold them is still in business. This is not a massage law, but a general law. I put a one year expiration date on my gift certificates just as an incentive for the client to book without waiting forever, but I honor them forever. If you have an attorney that is a friend, you may want to ask them for a reference. My advice is - if a client wants to redeem a 20 year old gift certificate - honor it.
Thanks for the info you guys. I have another question. I am taking the oral exam in 2 weeks and I am from out of state (GA). On the LA board website, it says out of staters need to bring a copy of their school catalog along with their national test scores and transcripts. My school did not have a catalog. Will this be a problem, does anyone know?
Hey Molly, What they need is is course descriptions to see how your hours are categorized to make sure that you have enough to transfer and complete LA requirements. Our state requires 125 hours of Anatomy & Physiology, 325 of massage techniques, and 50 of various classes including business, health, hydro, etc. For example, a transcript may say the applicant completed 20 hours of Kinesiology - but the catalog may describe it as structural kinesiology which might be applied toward the A&P hours; whereas applied kinesiology might be applied toward massage hours or not accepted at all. See if your school has a website with course descriptions that can be printed out. Also bring proof of passage of one of the national exams with you the NCE or MBLEX. Write me at mbreaux@hotmail.com and I'll send you our school's study guide for the oral.
PS IF you don't have enough hours after your transcript is evaluated, find a school in Louisiana that will transfer the hours that the board has accepted and sell you only the few hours you need to complete LA licensing. Good luck.
I saw you mention a study guide for the Louisiana Oral Exam in an earlier post. I am taking the exam this Friday and would love to look over it as a little extra last minute study material! My email address is avalentine99@gmail.com if you have a chance to send me a copy. It would be greatly appreciated!
Dr. Hanks in Jennings is looking to hire a new licensed massage therapist to work in his chiropractic practice. He would prefer a motivated therapist that lives in the Jennings, Lake Arthur, or Welsh area. Call 337.824.5522 to set up an interview appointment or to get more information. This is all the info I have and I'm posting this as a friend and colleague.
can someone email me the study guide for the Louisiana oral exam? I just moved here and want to take it soon! I have a Texas license but need to get on the ball in Louisiana! thanks! emilyrodewaldbates@yahoo.com

Where: Ramada Inn, 2713 N. Causeway Blvd.
Indian Champissage™ has been popular in India for over a thousand years. The head, neck, shoulders and upper back - areas where tension is more likely to accumulate - are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure simply melts away. This unique therapy combines physical and subtle massage with energy balancing to produce feelings of perfect peace. It is a wonderful alternative to seated chair massage.

Where: Ramada Inn, 2713 N. Causeway Blvd.
Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™ is a beautiful and relaxing healthcare modality which balances the body, mind and spirit. This unique treatment, steeped in centuries of Ayurvedic ceremony, incorporates ghee (clarified butter). The heart of the treatment involves vigorously rubbing the soles of the feet with a
3-metal bowl to draw heat and toxins out of the body thereby inducing tremendous relaxation. The Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™ is deeply revitalizing for tired feet and legs, and it makes a perfect addition to reflexology.

Salvo is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Instructional Technology at McNeese State University.
Thank you for the reminder regarding advertising requirements for CE classes. In my earlier posting, I should have included the following statement: "Approved by the Louisiana Board of Massage Therapy for a maximum of 21 and 7 CEUs, respectively."
Any Lafayette therapists (or surrounding areas) out there, Ashero Spa is hiring licensed therapists! They are located behind the Grand 16 theater and Zea's on Doucet rd.
Susan was the most amazing teacher I've had in any subject! Congrats to you Susan and thank you for all the effort you've put into becoming the best teacher ever!

Ethics – The Heart of Healthcare by Susan Salvo – 6 CE’s
At last!! For the First Time – a LOCAL Ethics course approved for your National Certificationstatus. Here is the class you NEED to take to stay nationally certified.
As humans, we have an internal identification of right and wrong, but do you know the up-to-date ethics practices concerning massage therapy? Ethics can be defined as the rules of conduct followed by an individual, distinctive to a particular group. It is not just a moral dilemma – it is also a legal one. …So, do you know your ethics? Are you sure? Are you willing to bet your business and personal assets on it? Would you like to have someone you can verbally ask instead of just reading a list of rules?
We have a powerhouse of an instructor teaching this much needed subject. Susan G. Salvo ,who recently received The Teacher of the Year Award, presented at the 2011 World Massage Festival is an Author, Instructor, and National lecturer that will walk you through the maze of ethics and practices. She makes you understand where ethics plays a role in the everyday operation of our businesses, in the massage room and out. This class will make you understand that ethics is really the “heart” of your practice.
Susan G. Salvo is a Nationally Certified and State Licensed Massage Therapist. In 1982, she completed a 1000 hour program at New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics. She has also created a series of online courses based on her pathology book. Ms. Salvo has contributed to the National Certification Exam as a member of their test item writing committee. She has written the chapter “Teaching to Students with Learning Challenges” for Teaching Massage, published by the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professional.

I am offering two unique workshops in Metairie in mid-September. The first, Indian Champissage™ (Head Massage) is a 3-day course for 21 CE hours. The second, Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™, is a 1-day course for 7 CE hours. Both courses are NCBTMB approved (450489-07) LAP0138, MS 82, TX CE1350, and FL 50-10661.
What: Indian Champissage™ (Head Massage)
When: Sep 16-18 (Fri/Sat/Sun) 9:00 - 5:00 each day
Where: Ramada Inn, 2713 N.
What: Kansa Vatki Foot Massage
When: Sep 19 (Mon) 9:00 - 5:00
For more information or to register, please visit http://www.mychampissage.com/ You may download a registration form at http://msusanwalsh.com/champissage/regform.pdf or call me at (703) 425-3331.

Ethics
– The Heart of Healthcare by Susan Salvo – 6 CE’s
At
last!! For the First Time – a LOCAL Ethics course approved for your National Certificationstatus.
Here is the class you NEED to take to stay nationally certified.
As
humans, we have an internal identification of right and wrong, but do you know
the up-to-date ethics practices concerning massage therapy? Ethics can be
defined as the rules of conduct followed by an individual, distinctive to a
particular group. It is not just a moral dilemma – it is also a legal one. …So,
do you know your ethics? Are you sure? Are you willing to bet your business and personal assets
on it? Would
you like to have someone you can verbally ask instead of just reading a list of
rules?
We
have a powerhouse of an instructor teaching this much needed subject. Susan G.
Salvo ,who recently received The Teacher of the Year Award, presented at the
2011 World Massage Festival is an Author, Instructor, and National lecturer
that will walk you through the maze of ethics and practices. She makes you
understand where ethics plays a role in the everyday operation of our
businesses, in the massage room and out. This class will make you understand
that ethics is really the “heart” of your practice.
Susan
G. Salvo is a Nationally Certified and State Licensed Massage Therapist.
In 1982, she completed a 1000 hour program at New Mexico School of Natural
Therapeutics. Ms. Salvo's training includes: polarity, infant massage
instructor, Myotherapy, Trager, hakomi, Reflexology, Pregnancy massage, Sports
massage, Craniosacral Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Spa Specialist, and
Watsu. Ms. Salvo holds an associate degree in history and a baccalaureate
degree in education from McNeese State University, where she is currently
working on her Masters of Science degree in educational leadership and
instructional technology.
As
an author, Ms. Salvo has written Massage Therapy: Principles and Practice
and Mosby’s Guide to Pathology for the Massage Therapist, both published
by Elsevier. She has also created a series of online courses based on her
pathology book. Ms. Salvo has contributed to the National Certification Exam as
a member of their test item writing committee. She has written the chapter
“Teaching to Students with Learning Challenges” for Teaching Massage,
published by the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professional. She has also
contributed a chapter “Geriatric Massage” for Modalities for Massage and
Bodywork published by Elsevier. Salvo co-authored a chapter
entitled“Draping and Basic Massage Strokes” for Muscle and Bone Palpation
Manual with Trigger Points, Referral Patterns, and Stretching by Joe
Musculino in 2008.
She
owns and operates Bodyworks Massage Therapy by Susan Salvo and Associates
which she founded in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1983. In 1987, Ms Salvo opened
the Louisiana Institute of Massage Therapy in Lake Charles, where she
serves as director and chief instructor.
Don’t
forget to look for Susan Salvo on YouTube!! Her videos demonstrate for “therapists
in training” what they have learned in the classroom– they are great study
tools!!
