I invite you to take a look at my website www.lomilomi-massage.org. I've added lots of new pages during the past year including a 9 page section on ho'oponopono and a list of books related to Hawaiian healing that have been useful to me. I"d be honored to have you lomi folks visit my website!
For those of you who don't know me, I practice and teach Mana Lomi®, a clinically focused yet spiritually grounded lomilomi developed by Dr. Maka'ala Yates, DC and coming through the linieage of Aunty Margaret Machado from the Big Island. Mana Lomi® can be identified by its deep yet gentle quality of touch, by the connection with bones we create and by its problem solving orientation.
I live in Seattle, WA and have a private practice here. I teach Mana Lomi® continuing education classes in Washington and in New England. (I grew up in New England - hence my connection to that part of the world.)
I have committed myself to the study and practice of Hawaiian healing arts since I graduated from Brian Utting School of Massage in in Seattle 1996. I practiced a form of Temple Lomi for 7 years before I began to study with Maka'ala in 2003. At that timie because I found Mana Lomi® to be ever so much more effective at resolving and relieving problems, and therefore much more satisfying to do, I made a full transition from Temple lomi to Mana Lomi®. (I say this with all due respect to other Temple lomi practitioners, realizing that this is my own personal experience.)
I look forward to hearing back from some of you in this discussion group.
Do you have an inspirational lomilomi story that you would be willling to share on my website? I have a special section where my site visitors can tell their own stories. You can even include a photo and/or lilnk to your own website if you'd like. Please check it out at http://www.lomilomi-massage.org/lomilomi-stories.html. I'd love to include your inspirational story on my website!
I've also recently added 3 short videos of Kumu Dr. Maka'ala Yates, DC - Mana Lomi founder - to my site. In two he is sharing his mana'o in circle and in the other he is teaching bodywork. See them at http://www.lomilomi-massage.org/lomi-lomi-gallery.html.
If you are ever in Germany, I recommend you get a Lomilomi massage. It is very popular and you can find practitioners in many cities and hamlet. The style is a bit different from here in the USA and can go 2 or 3 hours if you can afford it. They do much more with sliding their arms under the body. I loved that they flip you over effortlessly so there is no tightening of muscles to move during the massage. Ho'oponopono is a big part of the imported Hawaiian culture there.
My kumu lomi, Maka'ala Yates recently published an article online about the use of the term kumu lomi. He describes how "kumu" was used as he was growing up in Kona on the Big Island. He also shares his reflections on the recent use of the term "kumu" by people both Hawaiian and non Hawaiian that differs from the way it was used in his tradition.
Thank you Barbara and Maka'ala Yates. This is how I understand the role of a teacher. My Hwal Bup Do teacher is humble and helps those who ask. He never introduces himself with a title. But those that know him refer to him as Master Yun in respect for his skills and what he gives. It is this way with real teachers, I believe. It is about honoring the source of knowledge and those who have guided us to it.
I have heard many wonderful things about the teachings of Maka'ala. It is also my understanding that the honor of a name gets handed down to one. I have been training students in lomi from a more traditional aspect and I have been given the name by my hawaiian kahu of Kumu Ku'uleialoha. Prior to that I would never utilize the title even though I have been teaching. I honestly have a humble challenge in putting kumu before my name, although many say I should so others have the respect.
I agree with his philosophy and thoughts on teachers. I have been teaching for over 20 years but only the last 6 in Lomi. I always aspire to the growth I can also gain from my students while allowing them to find their path for healing.
I continue to learn from the hawaiian elders and will always be guided through humble gratitude of their love for this healing art.
I do respect the lineage and culture and thoroughly enjoyed Maka'ala's article. In humble gratitude and Aloha

I recently registered to attend the annual lomilomil conference hosted by the Hawaiian Lomilomi Associateion October 13-15, 2011 on the Big Island. Is anyone else on the forum planning to attend?
I'd love to go to the conference. But I already planned to be in Kaneohe for Kumu Karen Leialoha Carrol's class 6-9th and must return on the 10th to cover for another person taking vacation. I hope we will see lots of photos and hear lots of story.
That would be great Gloria. I hope I'll see you there. You can come along on my Sunday morning excursion to Leonard's for warm Malasada's. Kumu Karen said the class will wait because they must wait until the teacher get's back from Leonard's too. ;-)
Wish I could arrange having October in Hawaii. So many lomi things going on that month.

I think it is a great way to make Lomi friends & even find people to exchange with when traveling.
Aloha Barbara Helynn Heard and all lomilomi folks! Yes Barbara, I will be at the Hawaiian Lomilomi Association annual 'aha October 13-15 in Kona. I hope more folks from here can come as this is the only event sponsored by Native Hawaiians who are perpetuating the lomilomi and healing of Auntie Margaret Machado and Papa Henry Auwae. One full day will be given over to Kaipo Kaneakua, an amazing kahu who teaches about diagnosis, herbs, cleansing, lomilomi, ho'oponopono and more. You can go to our Facebook page to see more. Or if you're ready to register, go here. And feel free to contact me for more info. In addition to Kaipo, Papa Auwae's granddaughter will be joining us and many more luminaries of lomilomi.
using google's new feature for tracing historical interest, it shows how interest in lomi lomi has been increasing along with a peak in interest during annexation and early tourism.
Makana, that is very interesting. If you put lomi lomi & lomilomi together it makes up for some of the drops in popularity for lomilomi. Interesting seeing when intrest dipped and when it resurges.
yes I was wondering about that. Anything related to Hawaii might bring up recipes for spam musubi. Ah.... it has been a long time. Some things make the spirit feel good from the inside.
Here is an interesting word tidbit I was taught by Dr. Ben Nakamura about the word(s) lomi lomi. To massage - to break up - to mix - to bring together and most important - to make as ONE!
'Ohana Huna - Family Secrets - is the theme of the HLA annual 'aha Oct. 13-15. Here is a new interview with kupuna Kaipo Kaneakua with his insights into diagnosis, and what it takes for a non-Hawaiian to become a true lomilomi practitioner. Kaipo will be the featured presenter at the 'aha.
Aunty Mary Fragas, Aunty Nerita Machado, Uncle Donald Kaiahua and Yvonne Kaiahua, Uncle Alva Andrews, Uncle Kalama Makaneole, Uncle Alan and Auntie Antoinette Alapa'i, and more to be announced! All presenting at the Hawaiian Lomilomi Association in Kona Oct 13-15.
Thanks for this comment Daniel. This is the first I've heard of this book and I just ordered it after reading the exerpts available on Amazon. I read 3 of his previous books years ago and thoroughly enjoyed them.
That's why I asked Makana. Could you please provide the links to the reviews or comments you think should be read, as well as information on who the reviewers/commentators are. It would be a big help to us who do not know the people as well.
Here are the one star reviews - I don't know everyone who is commenting but do know a couple and know them to be Hawaiian and pono. Also I would urge everyone on this list to look at the Huna is not Hawaiian facebook page - we talked about this book and many others.
Good reviews, there is a whole world of thought as to the value of New Age interpretation of traditional ways. Since a person looking at these things has already their mindset, it will be processed in a non traditional focus.
This leads us to think it is false but I think even falsehood can be of benefit. Some are satisfied in embracing the new age thought that has been created by interpreting to the modern city dweller in a high tech world. But there are the few who will see a way new to them and explore. Perhaps a few of these few will be led into a traditional path. It is a gate to knowledge if we wish to push further. If nothing else it adds a bit of spirituality to the existing world. So inspite of the twists and misdirections by trying relate a traditional philosophy and life experience to the modern techie, there is a glimmer that may lead some further who would not have arrived otherwise.
My own discovery of Yogic Philosophy was from books written around 1900 under the pen name of Ramacharaka, an American who learned from Yogis at the Chicago World Fair.
Daniel, I agree that there might be some benefit for people who know nothing about Hawaii who happen to stumble upon Huna books. However, for people in this lomilomi forum, I believe it is our kuleana or responsibility to ground ourselves in authentic Hawaiian tradition. There are many wonderful books on Hawaiian spirituality written by Hawaiians, such as Tales from the Night Rainbow. Though I used to read Huna books, I stopped because I kept getting confused! it's easier for me to just focus on what is true Hawaiian, because I find the more I learn the more my practice deepens.
Aloha! What left is there to do to but to dis respect Miss understandings. and come to peace with what is. as it is. Embrace the Paradox!
Hawaiian Healing is valued by effectiveness. "Not any other value holds the space, of healing greater than the consciousness of christ." And by that she Continued, to her, it's love love love. Margret Machado in 1989, a great common people's teacher, would be scorned by her own kind for sharing with the out side world. She told me 'faith is a personal private choice, but a public event." Paycheck driven journalist are always at disguise. Researching publishing rights of the Book Tales of the night rainbow. you will find where the profit is for screaming Tradition. Since this morning I have been discovering a lot regarding Loea Frank Kawaikapuokalani K. Hewett. I hope to meet him sometime. It amazes me how things open up when you bring them out. I asked about him on facebook to discover that a close friend (actual) danced with his group 13 years ago. I also heard from another good friend (actual) that he is a family friend. It is just heart warming how a little light shed through a crack can bring a dawning.
When you follow your heart through clear focus and intention and with the knowing that you are doing good for the people, for the community, for the preservation of the community's soul force, then no amount of scrutiny or criticism and judgment will sway you from your path. To be "Authentic" is to work from the heart,it's not about what you say,it's about what you do. It's not about blood, it's about heart. The greatest wisdom is in simplicity,Love,Respect,Tolerance,Sharing,Gratitude & Forgiveness. it's not complex or elaborate. The REAL knowledge is free,it's encoded in your DNA,all you need is within you. Great teachers have stated this from the beginning. Find your heart and you WILL find your way.
