Hiya Jeni! Nice to see you formed an Ashi Group here :)
To everyone else...if you have not heard about Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, well..It is THE BOMB! Ashi rocked my world and SAVED my massage practice!!!!
After 2 shoulder surgeries, I wasn't sure if I could EVER do my most requested massage type / DEEP TISSUE. Ashiatsu has allowed me to work on almost ALL body types and they are AMAZED and ADDICTED to this profoundly smooth and flowing firm to deep bodywork. I've been calling it "Massage Crack!" My clients try it ONCE...and they are HOOKED, and coming back for more. It is a BODY SAVER for SURE! ASHI RULES!
I just had my first ashiatsu massage this past Tuesday. I had so many questions to ask the therapist but of course, with her standing on me, the words were hard to get out. :)
Number one silly question, have you ever fallen/slipped off of the table while doing the ashiatsu massage?
Is deepfeet.com the only reputable course to take to learn ashiatsu?
LOL...Yes...it is a bit difficult to say a whole lot during some Ashi moves..such as Mortisha Rack...ROFL. So... Amanda...what did you think about your first Ashi? Isn't it simply DELICIOUS?
No, that is not a silly question...and NO *knock on wood*...I have NOT slipped or fallen off the table.... I have had a couple of times where it felt like I could have. The trickiest times are when you are working on VERY broad/wide clients...then there is minimal standing space...but as of yet...luckily...no falls.... :)
Well, I would have to recommend ONLY taking Ashiatsu through DeepFeet.com...because they are the original Barefoot Bodywork Modality. Jeni would be able to tell you even MORE about this since she IS an instructor. I would LOVE to be...but I can only IMAGINE how hard it would be to qualify.
So what questions do you have about Ashi, I can help. I can tell you that I've only fallen once in 7 years, and that was my own stupidity - I was at my dad's house giving him a massage, the 1st outcall I had done in years, but he was desperate. I hopped up on the table just to do one particular move. I held that barefoot hold/stretch on him for so long that I "got in my groove" I guess and forgot that I wasn't at my office, so I leaned back and reached for where my bars should have been so I could go into the next stroke - but being I wasn't at the office the bars obviously weren't there... So I did fall, but I fell right onto the couch! Funny story, could have been worse. Lesson to learn, put bars up @ dads house ;)
As for who to learn with, Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is the first modality to have a nationally approved “barefoot-bar dedicated” course study, of which others now try to imitate. You can read more about our history, what we have to offer, and read the magazine articles and news clips that we have been "feetured" in - all available on our site: DeepFeet.com. There are other groups out there, so feel free to research what they have to offer, and compare the benefits to see whats right for you.
A quick word of warning, learning this form of massage from a DVD doesn't allow you to feel the stroke in its entirety from the instructor, like how we teach in our workshops, so you don't really know the correct feeling or potential of the stroke unless you receive it and understand its purpose from an experienced trainer. There is a lot, and I mean a LOT of information that you'll learn in our workshops that could never fit on a DVD: from barefoot massage history to marketing, from bar construction to contraindications, from getting worked on by an instructor who is trained directly by the founder to getting your chance to work on the instructor for precise feedback, and practice practice practice! So a live workshop from an AOBT instructor somewhere across the nation really is the most efficient and safe way to learn this massage.
Hi everyone! If you are already an Ashiatsu graduate, we've created a new graduates corner! Come try it out and connect with Ashi-folk worldwide! http://www.deepfeet.com/graduates.htm
WOW! It's been a while since I've been in here! So a few new things have developed in the world of Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy: WE'VE GOT A BLOG! Yah, only like, 10 years behind, but hey, better late than never!
Check it out at www.ashiatsu.posterous.com.
We've also got a Twitter, full of awesome tid-bits and feet-tweets: www.twitter.com/AOBT
Our team of instructors have been posting updates on classes, additions to the workshop schedule, videos, pictures, and lots more, so be sure to check us out!
I took Ashiatsu Barefoot Basics and Front/Side-Lying in late July and August at the Stone Temple Sanctuary in CT with Sarah Maxwell. LOVED IT!! My bars are up, my evaluations done and I am so looking forward to really taking off with this new modality on my menu. Can anyone offer advice on how to market AOBT? I have a picture video I plan to post on my site and am looking into making an actual motion video to post on youtube. My clients who've tried AOBT love it. I am also offering free 30 minute sessions (added on to a regular appointment) for my existing clients just so they can try it out first. Any other ideas?
Tonya, there is an online free class tonight that might help you: ABMP BizFit Series & Applied Bodywork Series
September 15
Marketing with Social Media, with Eric Brown (ABMP BizFit Series) http://www.abmp.com/webinars/ for more info.
I worked on converting all my deep tissue clients over to Ashi, as long as they werent' contraindicated for it, so that could be a good place to focus for you.
GOod luck!
Ashiatsu graduates: Your talented toes are needed in Texas! AOBT has a vendor booth at the TAMT ( Texas Association of Massage Therapists ) Convention in Ft Worth on October 15-17th. This is a great opportunity for you to practice your Ashi-work on the public, play on the portable bars, & learn how to market your massage. I can offer CEU's (1 Texas State CE per hour worked) for your volunteer time. Sign up at the link below.
Jeni, thanks for the information. How timely! I just had my website revamped so I can better take advantage of social media! I'll definitely check to see whether I can access a recording of the 9/15 series on AMBP. Thanks again and best of luck to you too!
New classes added recently for St Petersberg Florida, Chicago, Jackson Hole Wyoming, Kansas, Seattle, and Houston... not to mention our existing cities in Denver, Oahu, Vegas, Sacramento, Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, Cincinnati, Battle Creek, Durham and Deleware!
