Interesting story. I believe I have been to that site as well on my travels.

I have often been in the presence of 'Kahuna' or other wise ones that did not speak until you asked a question. ;)

Off to teach Lomi this morning. Aloha for sharing
  • Gloria Coppola

We practiced Ike all week at the training (along with the other 6 principles)!!!
"BE Aware" The world is what you think it is. Yes! Thank you for the word of the day.
    Aloha

Can't wait to bring the Lomi class to Minnesota this SEptember.
The class I just taught last week in Asheville was totally amazing! Wow, they moved the earth for sure and love flowed everywhere. Can't wait to share that with your group of Ohana

Another Hawaiian power word - HALAWA - where the breath of god meets the light of god time stops and GOD IS.
This word always gives me chicken skin!
  • rudy m smith

Gloria thank you for spreading your aloha! I spoke unclearly about IKE leaving the definition and the translation off: The World Is What You Think It Is.
    Thank You.
  • William Neil

Sterling here from Nashville, TN interested in learning about Lomi Lomi, have been interested in Esalen for a long time, thanks.
  • Agnes Trama

Thank You for sharing all the Hawaiian power words. Please do keep them coming. I am learning alot.
  • Janet Wickell

Last week's class with Gloria, in Asheville, was amazing. We were all so very different (in many, many ways), but with her guidance, the group melded together and worked as family. We worked individually of course, but energy and love flowed from the group as a whole, and when extra teamwork and support were required, they emerged. I have been running non-stop for years, feeling scattered and stressed much of the time. I'm sure those feelings will still be there, because I wear too many hats, but now, giving a massage has turned into a DE-stressing event for me, rather than just one more thing I have to do. That feeling was a fantastic, but unexpected, result of the class.
  • Agnes Trama

Yes Janet, I understand what you mean by wearing too many different hats. I have learned to slow down which means less money too but well worth the peace. Perhaps there will come a time where we can focus on one thing and do it well. I am happy you derived that peace from Gloria's class.
    Thanks for sharing.

How has Lomi changed your life? I'd like to know. Mahalo
  • rudy m smith

Lomi is my life, my purpose, my gift... how has it changed me - it transformed me to become that which I am; a person whose life is centered on helping others heal.
  • Gloria Coppola

Let us IKE - be aware of how we are in the world. What do you notice?
How do you interact? HA = The Breath of Life. HA

What beautiful thing can you share with your clients today? When your clients speak of drama do you listen and agree or do you call them back to a higher place by asking them about the good, the powerful, the beautiful in their lives? It is unwise to let a client talk about negative things while massaging them... but if you let them talk about power (MANA) food for the body, mind (mana mana) and spirit (mana loa) they will lift off your table inspired for all that awaits them!
  • Keoni Salgado

Aloha, On this eve of the events of 9/11 its a perfect time to reflect on the Hawaiian principles we all have come to live and love. Know that we are all tied with the aka cords of humanity, and the universal energies of Mana to love, forgive, and reflect on how fortunate we all are to be in this line of work... to heal another human with our touch and to inspire future generations with our actions.
  • rudy m smith

    Mahalo Keoni.

    For my Lomi colleagues.

    Aloha Kakahiaka Kakou!
If any of you are interested in learning the Traditional form of Hawaiian Lomilomi by Native Hawaiian Kumu and Kupuna, the Hawaiian Lomilomi Association is having its 10th annual conference this year on the island of Oahu in a beautiful tranquil setting of a traditional Hawaiian farm. You may find more info at www.lomilomi.org.There are going to be valuable presentations by Kupuna and Kumu from Hawaii and New Zealand this year and it is going to be an exciting and worthwhile event. Please strive to learn from Native Practitioners for they are the closest to the source one can get. As the leaders of this group know well, nothing beats learning this tradition from Native Practitioners and learning in Hawaii. Many mahalos to Gloria Coppola for posting the link to the lecture from Kumu Kaohe Silva. He is one of the best Kumu Lomilomi and was a founder and former President of the Hawaiian Lomilomi Asssociation. I hope to see some of you at the conference.
    Aloha nui loa,
    Kumulomilomi S. Pualani Gillespie

I feel very honored to be mentoring under Lomi Kumu Dane Silva this March 2010. He has also agreed to be apart of a training on Kauai For September 2010 for 2 full days. He will share his gifts, wisdom, ho'oponopono, hands on techniques etc. Much gratitude as the wise elders come forth!
  • Gloria Coppola

I would like to put out to those of us wishing to embark upon the journey of lomi or in the midst of it all.......Please honor the tradition and roots. If you don't know what that is, please ask the elders and find the source. This is "not" a modality we learn in a few hours or a couple of days.

This is a life path. It is more than technique and the blessings that will come will be a thousand fold.

I continue to study and learn, each and every day. Even when I facilitate a class, I am blessed to continually receive information and guidance, for I know not what will present it self in any day. I must remain open and ready to receive this information.

Every class/situation is different. Life is different, our healing is different.

I feel blessed that even after 10+ years of study, I will mentor under a hawaiian kumu very soon when I return home to hawaii this March.

So for those wanting to know the differences between lomi and anything else - the depth is beyond, the aumaka will show you the way when you are prepared and ready, the connection with all that is will widen and you will never have to ask what the difference is, because you will know it in your heart - for there are no words.

Our western mind wants everything in a few hours, SLOW DOWN, Pay Attention and allow the process to unfold. Honor and Respect the tradition. Continue to study. Continue to learn. Continue to heal and grow.

I had a dream many years ago while living on Kauai. The Goddess Pele came to me and even today, 9 years later I am still working on a painting she asked me to do.....each year she guides me and provides me with what I should paint. I want to finish it yes....but I cannot do it in my time. I must do it ....in time.

Well said, Gloria. Your words remind me of a quote I read recently in a book by Malcolm Naea Chun, one of our most precious treasures, who has translated numerous books on Hawaiian traditions of medicine and healing. He wrote:

"Hawaiian values are not merely a set of discrete behaviors from which one selects. Nor can one learn behaviors that reflect these values by signing up for workshops. One could argue that such a perspective would lead to lists of traits or characteristics that are so global and universal that they are shared and experienced by all of humanity -- they are, after all, what makes us human. However, when they are practiced with an understanding and within the context of a native world view, demonstrating the interrelatedness and interdependencies of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity, then it is Hawaiian.

"Kamakau saw what could happen when people no longer 'could distinguish good from evil' and seemed adrift from being pono. The restoration of pono -- the word for this is ho'oponopono -- must be linked to the traditions and history of Hawai'i. It is a process that has developed to become more than 'making things right.' Today, it includes to restore and heal or ho'ola, literally 'to give life,' by mending the broken relationships between members of family, community, and perhaps even a people. Deep and clear understanding, appreciation, and awareness of pono are a start to that restoration." Malcolm Naea Chun, "Pono the Way of Living," CRDG, University of Hawai'i, page 19-20
  • Gloria Coppola

Eloquently put, Makana!. I will have to read that book by Malcolm. Mahalo!
  • Makana Risser Chai

Actually, Malcolm has written 12 small booklets on Hawaiian values that are being compiled into one book next year. I suggest you wait until the new book is out.The booklets are $12 each! The book will cover ho'oponopono, hewa, ho'omana, kapu, ho'onohonoho, ola, welina, kaka'olelo, a'o and more.
  • Gloria Coppola

That sounds great ! I look forward to the book...and yours coming too so I can share with my students. Thanks for all that you do!
  • Gloria Coppola

I wanted to share a video I made from a recent Lomi training hosted by our colleague Ryan from Massage Nerd in Minnesota.
    Hope you enjoy!

Aloha Everyone - If anyone is looking for lomi lomi training and/or just a great Hawaiian experience, take a look at the Aloha festival in Tempe, AZ in March. On March 9th - 12th, Sacred Lomi with Tom Cochran will be providing a 32 hour class on lomi lomi. Then on March 13th and 14th is the Arizona Aloha Festival. Last year 150,000 people attended it. I have a spa in the area so let me know if you are coming and need any info on the area, events, etc. Read more about the training and festival in this article.
  • rudy m smith

what's the weather like in tempe in march?
  • Steve Ibach

It is almost always Sunny year round. The temperatures should be in upper 70's or low 80's.
  • Makana Risser Chai

The International Journal of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork: Research, Education, & Practice just reviewed the book, Massage Modalities. Budiman Minasny, PhD. of The University of Sydney, Australia wrote, "The chapter on Lomi Lomi is great." Kumu Dane Silva and I took some heat because some people felt it wasn't "mystical" enough. It's nice to be recognized for what it is - a therapeutic modality with ancient roots. The full review is here.

Mahalo Gloria, for quoting my book, Hawaiian Massage Lomilomi: Sacred Touch of Aloha, in your article! I especially love Allen Alapa'i's quote, "Life is a feeling, not a thinking." Allen always reminds us to look for the baby boy, baby girl, inside each person. At this time of year when many of us celebrate a sacred birth, it is good to be reminded of the baby within each of us.
  • Karen Reifinger

Aloha Everyone. I'm relatively new to this network and so happy to see the quality of information and sharing. Lomilomi has been a journey of passion and miracles for me. For some time I’ve sensed the coming expansion of new yet old, knowledge, not knowing when or how; have been in and out of pono with new teachings vs. old teachings, spiritual ‘leaders’ and gurus, what ‘should’ be done and what innately happens. Constantly, I’d receive nuggets of information about Lomilomi, the nature of what it is and what isn’t. So one late night when that tall orange feather clad warrior appeared at the foot of my bed, I knew it was time to gather the info and get into motion.

We're presenting this spring, Return To Source: LomiLomi Training & Healing Retreat in Kauai, March 18-28 , Exploring the Roots and Truths of Lomilomi Temple Style.

What we’re doing is similar to what Terry Shintani did a few years back…restoring integrity and authenticity. We’re hoping to provide a deeper experience and education for lomi practitioners other than what is typically presented on the mainland. Joining us with similar vision is Harry Uhane Jim, Dane Silva, Gloria Coppola, Sandra Michael, Phil Young, Morag Campbell, just to name a few.

Some of you already know this…much western Lomilomi is dressed with bells and whistles and has evolved (or devolved) into a marketing advantage for spas, after hours massage, a way to accumulate those needed CEUs, and a new age interpretative style blending everything from under the Sun and beyond Pluto! Still profound, yet drifting from pono and Source.

Our goal is to present evolving and traditional Hawaiian healing systems so that we can offer the world the best of both old and new concepts with understanding and mastery. Our goal is to help everyone understand the cause and effect of true healing through Hawaiian values and healing concepts.

Thank you Nancy Kahalewai for your inspiration and insights in your revision "Hawaiian Lomilomi Big Island Massage."

Hope you can join us! More info:

I just wanted to let everyone know that the stars will be shining brightly in the night sky over Kealakekua and Keei from now on for our beloved teacher, mother and mentor has left us to join her "co-pilot" Uncle Dan in heaven. This morning at 4:00 am Margaret Kalehuamakanoeliliu'onapali Machado went home to be with her beloved Jesus. Her family and dearest students were with her last night and we sang her favorite songs and prayed for her safe journey home. She was in her 93 year with us on this earth and the amount of lives she has touched is endless. Her early students became the founders of Massage Magazine and others founded ABMP, as well as great authors and teachers. Her thousands of students share her loving touch around the world and share the true meaning of ALOHA. Her message to all was a simple one. LOVE ONE ANOTHER....She was a true example of pure love. Her Lomilomi massage of "touching the body with a loving touch" will be shared for generations of massage therapists to come. Her lifestyle of unconditional love, prayer and forgiveness will always be the one and only truest heart of Lomilomi Massage. We all rejoice that she is now with Uncle Dan and her beloved Jesus.
I am priviledged and blessed to have been under her guidance as a patient, student and a teacher of Hawaiian Lomilomi and I will honor her every day for the rest of my life as I am with others as we walk thru the garden of life together.

Mahalo nui loa a ha'a ha'a Auntie Margaret. We will love you forever.

    Blessings to all,
    Pualani Gillespie
