Thomas, welcome to the field! I myself am pretty new - licensed 2 months now after graduating school in June. I'm establishing my own practice. Saw ten clients last month, and have had three hours of full priced appointments so far this month. I feel like I'm off to a really good start, in a great community - working at as an independant practitioner at a local wellness center. The thing that seems the most critical to me is doing whatever it takes to re-inforce and sustain your enthusiasm and focus. Organization and follow through are so key! A great idea only pays off if you have the focus to make it happen. Also, depending on what type of massage you do and what your aim is for a session, potential clients are often have no idea and appreciate us going the extra mile to explain the"why"s :). Also, the best pay-offs I've had so far are doing promotional massage (charging them $15 for over head, but otherwise giving them the hour for free) for people that are well connected and caring individuals. More than half of last months clients were direct word of mouth referals even though I'd only just started! If you end up working in some sort of center that has a receptionist, give them a promo massage and it will probably come back for you big time!
