I'm writing an article about how your social/environmental efforts can deepen your client/practitioner relationships. I'd like to talk to a couple of massage therapists about their experiences.
If you volunteer in your community or take extra care to make socially/environmentally responsible business decisions, how has this impacted your client relationships? Do you find you draw clients who share your values? Are they perhaps more loyal because they share your values? Do you find that relationships are more satisfying for both client and practitioner when they're enhanced by shared values?

Thanks, Gordon. I agree that we need to be willing to work on a wide variety of people, both for practice-building and for ethical reasons. I'm talking about something a bit different. For example, when there was a newspaper article about my volunteer work, my clients brought the clipping to their appointments and said they loved learning about the non-professional work I do. It strengthened the relationship with those clients because they valued my priorities. A colleague of mine made an instant connection to a first-time client when she learned he volunteers at a home for people with special needs, because she has a son with similar special needs.
So I'm asking other therapists if they've seen similar relationship-building in their practices if they support a local charity or install solar panels, etc.

We do volunteer in the community. We also give free massage to any veteran returning from a war zone all year round, and on Veteran's day we give free massage to veterans all day, among other things. My staff members all have the discretion to discount work or offer a sliding fee to someone who truly needs it and doesn't have the money.
Environmentally, one of the best things we do is use Britta filters at our office and avoid bottled water, and we use essential oils to make our own sprays for cleaning. Clients are always commenting on the pleasant aroma! And yes, people do appreciate businesses that act socially and environmentally responsible.
