massage and bodywork professionals
a community of practitioners
I am considering closing my practice for various reasons including; injuries, financial burn-out, general burn-out. I am looking for advice on how to do this. I am having trouble finding other MT's that have closed a private practice and left the profession. I welcome any comments or referrals to others if you have no advice/experience with this.
Thank you

Linda, I'm sorry to find you are leaving your practice. I don't have any specific experience to offer though I found this article interesting and possibly offers a place to begin in general terms.
I wish you the best of luck as you make your decisions.

Hi Kathy,
Thank you for the link to the article from the APA. I have been looking for something like that through ABMP and AMTA, but so far have not found anything.
Thank you,
Linda
I am a bit surprised neither organization has any information written about closing a practice. Maybe you can blog/write about your experience and make it available to others. I've found additional links that might be helpful (the third one from the SBA seemed to have a good bit of info):
I closed a service business once, entirely unrelated to bodywork, after 10 yrs in one spot. I spent a few months at it.
I stopped taking new customers. I talked directly to my regular customers and mailed a notice to my less regular ones. I found referrals for some of them.
I set a date, then changed the outgoing message on my answering machine to a "business closed" message. After a while I had the phone service turned off.
That was it!
Thank you Kathy and Lee - both very helpful suggestions. I will look into the links Kathy - thank you!
Thank you Kathy - great resources!

I'm glad you found them helpful.
Hi Linda- I am sorry to hear you have to close your practice. I know injury and burn-out are a big concern for massage therapists. My company is offering some great incentives to joining our team and I would be happy to share those with you if you are looking for your next career adventure. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like more information.
I wish you much success in your future.
