I've got a couple of women going through menopause that keep getting hot flashes during massage. Almost as if the massage is triggering the hot flashes. Any thoughts on why this might be?

I'm doing my best to regulate room temperature, and to uncover them as much as possible once they start having the hot flash. It's getting to the point where at least one of them is anticipating getting hot flashes during the massage and it's making her not look forward to coming in.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Amanda

I wonder if these clients are also prone to getting most of their hot flashes at night? I know some women suffer most from it at night (this always happened to my mother), and the similarities between that and a massage where she's lying down, relaxing, perhaps in a dimly lit room and/or with her eyes closed etc, might be triggering it in some way.

Hey Carrie,

Good question! I'll have to check with them and see. I appreciate your help!

Thanks!

What modality do you use. We do Lymphatic Massage (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Touch-of-Jade-Lymphatic-Massage/1165...) for women getting hot flashes. Helps balance temp regulation. Usually controls it for 7 to 10 days.

Part of life...forget the table warmer, have a fan in the room, and crips cotton sheets, no blanket...it'll be fine.

I've had hot flashes for about 3 years now.  Everyone talks about how hot you get - and it's truly amazing!  So much fun to have sweat mix with massage oil while working on a client...Anyway, it seems that very few people talk about how cold you get after a hot flash.  As that sweat evaporates, it can really chill a person.  I'd suggest having a blanket ready and being prepared to use it for a few minutes at a time.

Daniel - I will look up the link you posted.  I do LDT (Chickly Institute) and I know it's good for pages and pages of things but I didn't know it helped with hot flashes!  I might be able to work on myself...

Therese, thanks for bringing this up. I've been lucky enough to have a client who is pretty open about talking about her hot flashes, and it's been a good educating moment for me. She was telling me that the same thing happens to her, also. I've just been doing my best to regulate the temp. and check in with them when I can tell they are having a hot flash. I appreciate your input!

Thanks,

Amanda

Glad I could help, Amanda!  I think it's great when people are open about what's happening with them.  So much of life is a mystery and it doesn't need to be!

Does your client get a "warning" when a hot flash is about to start?  I get about 90 seconds - I feel a change in my head, my energy tanks and I consistently think "Wow I feel awful"  OK there's a lot more colorful language inside my head too but you get the idea! :)  And then the hot flash starts...It's almost a relief because even though I'm hot and sweating I feel "normal" again.
