I would like to accept and bill insurances. I need to know if there are other insurances - other than Aetna that accept "Medical Massage" in the state of Indiana. Please, help!

Sarah,
It's not so much as the insurance company accepting "medical massage." It is whether or not they will pay for massage therapy (CPT 97124) from a therapist or they will only pay someone who is a PT, MD, DC, etc. There is no code for "medical massage." You may look into your state's massage laws-is there a license? Try asking around and see if you can find someone who has been billing insurance and talk to them. I am in California and insurance is limited. Best of luck.

To add to what Jody said (which was great info BTW) - aside from health insurance, what about Auto or Work Comp? While I don't bill work comp (IMO their system, at least in CA, is a mess) I do work with a lot of people who have been involved in automobile accidents and have medical payments coverage on their policies. Of the 3 (health, auto and work comp) I find auto to be the easiest system to navigate as a provider.
Like Jody, I am in California, so realize things might be different in Indiana. Best of luck to you!
Thanks Jody! Well I guess we CMT's have a long way to go with this!

I probably get the most from the majors (State Farm, AAA, Progressive) - it's pretty random really. Before you start along that path, I would highly recommend taking a class in Insurance Billing tailored for Massage Therapists.
There is a LOT to know - there's way more to it than just knowing how to fill out a form. You need to understand HIPAA, how to go about getting credentialed, how to work with injury cases to make sure you get paid, how to form treatment plans and work within the confines of a prescription, etc. You also need to know how each system works: health insurance companies work differently than auto insurance companies - even two different health plans within the same company can be different, e.g. Not all Aetna plans are the same (HMO vs PPO etc.).
I would highly recommend taking a class in person rather than online - being able to ask questions and having them answered is highly beneficial. If your local massage school doesn't teach insurance billing, LMT Success Group teaches a class that I would recommend.
