I am amazed that there is still an expectation that people will perform Sports Massage for free. I have worked an an Ironman tri and it is very different than your average triathlon. It requires much more knowledge of first aid, thermal injuries, and has a much longer work time.
When athletes pay over $350 to race, why should they get free massage?
Really Jodi...?!!!
Because the amount of $$$ that the event brings to the city. That revenue helps almost every industry in town including LMT's!

To be a volunteer on race day means you spend 4 to 6 hours of your time at ten minutes a person. It's Awesome! You're working outside, their is excitement in the air, you meet some really cool people from around the world. You get to meet and work with your peers on common ground and share ideas, bridge the gaps, make opportunities, gain experience... Few things are more rewarding than giving back. It saddens me to see you therapists only thinking about whats in it for you. Is it so bad to donate a few hours a year to support the city and its effort to gain tourism dollars and recognition? SHEESH!!!!
Paul,
I don't disagree with you. However, to put in a full day of Sports Massage for free goes against my ideas of massage. It's also sad that someone competing for over 12 hours only gets a 10 minute massage. At the Ironman that I worked at, we charged a fair rate, donated money back to the event and some to the California AMTA. Again, giving back for me doesn't mean giving away something. I am a happy to volunteer other things than massage. I am not being selfish, only looking at the big picture, free Sports Massage is not a good idea.
By the way, my name is spelled Jody.
