I am working with a 13 year old boy who plays a lot of soccer and has intense discomfort and pain with shin splints... would kinesio taping be helpful... if so, would you tape in the direction of the muscles?

YES!!!! The muscle has torn away from the tibia so tape in small strips from the lateral back of the calf to the front and over the tibia. As you apply, anchor in the back of the calf and keep a fairly tight pull on the tape toward the front and across the tibia. Apply in rows angling upward to hold that muscle on the bone and allow healing.
ABSOLUTELY! Please find a CKTP to administer the tape. There are alot of knock off tapes and unqualified (uneducated) persons using this therapy. Go to www.kinesiotaping.com for a certified practitioner in your area. I am certified and have also completed the advanced studies in peds. The cut of the tape, the stretch applied and placement of the tape are all extremely important for successful treatment. That being said, you would use one "I" strip for a peds or "Y" strip for adults also a "Y" strip with base inferior to the pain w/tails surrounding the pain. There would be no advantage to applying small strips of tape as there is no medicine in the tape.
Thanks so much for your input!

Both ankles or one side. If one sided the hip might be ( SI JOINT PROBLEM) out and the Quad is strained. Try doing Active Isolated Stretching to release the Quad and see if that doesn't help.
Thanks, D***, I will keep this in mind and give it a try. Have a great day!
