Hello! Does anyone know of a good liability insurance provider in California? I chose to register with the new California Massage Therapy Council instead of the AMTA so it looks like I will be on my own insurance-wise!

Thanks!

I have been insured through my ABMP membership for 11 years. CAMTC is the state recognized nonprofit organization certifying as CMT in California. This has nothing to do with professional membership organizations like AMTA or ABMP or insurance coverage. If you rent a space be sure to read the paragraph on insurance requirements.
Which provider does ABMP use? It looks like I would have to be a member to find out any info about their insurance! Thanks!
Did Daniel answer your question fully? Basically what you get from the CAMTC is the title of Certified Massage Therapist and an associated number. This qualifies you to work as a CMT in California however most therapists will also want to get personal liability insurance. This protects you against law suits as a result of your work on people. I believe Daniel is alluding to the additional insurance you may want to purchase to cover any accidents that might occur in your workplace if you are renting it. (Ex: your client trips on a loose carpet and is injured.)

I will let you know if I find a reasonably priced policy!
The producer/agency is Midwest General Agency. The policy issued by Evanston Insurance Co. You have to be a member to receive the insurance. The ABMP staff is very good in responding to e-mail questions. I suggest you go to their site and go to their "contact us" tab

Hi Julia! In case you are still mulling over your options, you might also want to check out Massage Magazine Insurance Plus, which includes professional liability insurance, general liability insurance, product liability insurance, $2 million per occurrence, $3 million annual aggregate coverage, $2 million product aggregate coverage, $100,000 rental damage insurance, $15,000 identity protection insurance and $1,000 lost or stolen table and equipment coverage. In addition to each therapist receiving full insurance coverage immediately upon completion of a short online application, the massage therapist receives a free website, directory listing and monthly newsletter.

To sign up or for more information on MMIP, visit www.massagemagins.com or call (800) 222-1110.

I wish you the best in your search!

Thanks Rick! We actually switched providers though to better serve our members, and the policy is now underwritten by APIC. I'm also happy to answer any questions here as well!

Hi Julia!

We at ABMP have some of the most comprehensive coverage available in the industry, and there are several key differences between our insurance and what you can get through other providers (especially the cheaper policies out there--they're usually cheap for a reason!). For a full description of what we offer, check out http://www.abmp.com/insurance/.
One thing in particular that you'll want to look our for when you're shopping around is claims made vs. occurrence form coverage. What we at ABMP offer is occurrence form coverage--this means that if an incident happens, but the claim doesn't come up 'till later (sometimes years later, with the long statute of limitations in some states), you're still covered as long as the incident happened during a period for which you carried liability insurance with us.
The other type of coverage, claims made, is definitely an inferior form of liability insurance, and this is the type you'll usually get with cheaper policies. With claims made, you could be insured today and have an incident occur today, but if your liability insurance expires a month later and you don't renew, and the actual lawsuit comes after your insurance has expired, you're out of luck. That's just one of the many reasons that ABMP's coverage is some of the best around--we're occurrence form coverage, not claims made coverage.

The other BIG difference between us and some of the cheaper providers is that the liability insurance is just one part of the extensive member benefits you get with ABMP--we're a membership association serving the massage and bodywork profession, not just an insurance salesman. As an ABMP member you get a free website (which is definitely superior to other organizations' offerings), marketing support, discounted CE and webinars, a bunch of great member discounts (some, like the insurance and cell phone discounts, could save you more than the cost of your membership!), and a knowledgeable, friendly staff of 50+ people here in Colorado who are involved in and know the profession, and know how to help you be successful in your practice.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me directly at abram@abmp.com or 800-458-2267x635. Thanks!

Best,

Abram Herman
