massage and bodywork professionals

a community of practitioners

I have been in massage therapy for close to 5 years. I live in a very rural area in Kansas. I started doing Swedish Massage after training with a therapist who had been in practice for 25 years (she was trained in Colorado).

After a year of working on my own, I really wanted more training, but the nearest school was 80 miles away. I visited the school and enrolled for the 640 hours and attend 3 days a week. The first day of class we were informed that the 640 hours had been changed to 840! That added several more months to my program, but I had not choice in the matter. I took a leave of absence 4 months into school because of a neck problem, but then could not return and withdrew. I continued to work on my own as a massage therapist - I completed most of the course work and study on my own. The majority of the hours I lack are hands-on, which I had been doing already in my own business, but of course didn't count towards my training. Transcripts from the school are only available to students who complete the program. I do not have credit for any of the work I did in school. I simply could not afford to continue.

I would like to sit for the national exam and be certified, I have tried everywhere to find out if I can do the portfolio review to be eligible for the ncbtmb. I don't find any clear answers.

I feel I could provide a nice portfolio of skills and knowledge as well as letters of recommendation from many healthcare providers who use and refer my services.

Has anyone used the portfolio review for the ncbtmb? Is anyone else in a similar situation in a state that doesn't regulate massage?
