Hello-
Anyone had experience with these face cradles (EARTHLITE CARESS FACE REST, KURVE COMFORT FACEREST SYSTEM and KURVE COMFORT FACE REST PAD)?
Is there a significant difference between these and the standard ones?
Do you know of other types or ideas for people who have trouble with the face cradle pressure on face and sinuses, including myself...?

I have a LOVE - HATE relationship with face rest cushions.

Oakworks has a new product they are using called Aero-cel.

It’s the best on the market, but is still not super comfortable so I followup with a memory foam face rest pad.

You have it wash the latter quite a bit to get rid of an odor I’m not real fond of.

This is the best alternative I’ve found --- a comfortable face rest cushion may not exist.

Question for you…

When do you or your clients start feeling uncomfortable when using a face rest while prone?

Immediately?

After time has passed?

How much time on the average?

P.S. For my clients with sinus congestion, I just avoid the prone position and work back, neck, and shoulders in a side lying position. It oftentimes the position (gravity, that is) rather than a cushion that is the issue.
Thanks Susan- I just ordered the memory foam cushion and I can't wait to see if it improves the discomfort. Did you say you can wash it? In the washing machine?
I assume you own the Aero-ce;, but since you follow it with the memory foam pad- is it worth the investment to buy a whole new face rest, or just using the foam on a standard pace rest will be enough? (Which is my plan for now..)

I can tolerate 10-20 min but as soon as the therapist moves to my legs I turn my head immediately...
As far as clients- some just "hate" it even before we start... on some I do prone work for only 15-20 min. and the rest is done in supine. If they are congested i do side position but many of them "stick it out" because they just love the prone work....
Thanks for your input!

Yeah – The memory foam pads I’ve seen have an odd odor. A few spins in the washing machine followed by dryer time helps.

Oddly, I don’t have the Aero-cell face cushion. They are fairly new. I know about them through students who buy them at the school where I teach.

You are right, I wouldn’t buy a new cushion until your old one is worn out – The pad may be all that is needed.

Just don’t be surprised if clients don’t notice a huge difference (in fact, don’t say anything when you get it and see if they comment).

They may say "what smells funny?" Just kidding.

Good luck.

Eeris,

I have the KUR face rest, it made a little difference for my clients. It didn't totally take away the problem. It is better than the standard face rest that came with my table. If you find something better let me know.

Kathy
Thanks Kathy, from both of you it doesn't sound too promising.. I will give the memory foam a try...
Kathy- if you can rate the KUR vs the standard- what will you rate each at a scale 1-10? (Ten being ideal)

Hi Kathy,

I've used the Boiance face pad that attaches to your present face cradle, it has worked for me, although I would say nothing is perfect. Worth a look and I would always use one http://massage-table.com/face-cradle-pillows.asp
I also have the Kur face rest and have used it for about 6 years. My clients and I both LOVE it and I would rate it a 10.

Hmm...I've never found the face rest uncomfortable. If it's in a horribly wrong position I've had to make minor adjustments, or open the center area up a little and I'm fine. In a normal hour massage I don't like to spend less than 15-20 minutes on the back. The runny nose thing can become a problem. My clients will either suck it up or just take a quick second to blow their nose...maybe move their head to the side while I work the low back.I do like to use a fleec cover for an extra bit of comfiness for my clients. Keeps it constant between my table and the face cradle.
Hi Eeris,

I would say the KUR on 1-10 would be about a 8, and the standard would be about a 4. Hope this helps!

Kathy

I have a Stronglite table, arm rest and face cradle. I like what I have and yes I use a memory foam cradle for the face on occasions. It all depends on what the client is comfortable with. The arm rest has been a project though; I changed tables because the arm rest on one table was pulling the face cradle out of position. So I looked at the other options until I found the one I wanted. Hope this would help in your situation.
Peaceful thoughts,
