Spreading the word...

How do you promote your new employees / ICs? We all know that the best referral source comes from your clients spreading the word to their friends, families, and co-workers. But how do you get that ball rolling for the newest member on your crew?
Second line of questioning is for the new recruits themselves. How would you like to see yourself promoted? If you could sit your employer down and say what you are really thinking in terms of marketing yourself, what would it be?
