Ohashiatsu Beginning I – Classes forming now with Frances Farmer, COI in Ann Arbor, Michigan

30 Hour Classes will span five Sundays 10:00 – 5:00 January 8th, 15th, 22nd, February 5th, 12th, 2012

Ohashiatsu is a unique method of healing touch, meditation and self-improvement which takes shiatsu/acupressure to a different level. An energizing dance, an Ohashiatsu session combines hands-on touch techniques, limb rotation, and stretches, in a seamless flow of movement. With a focus on experiential learning, Ohashiatsu courses were developed to improve the health and well-being of the giver and the receiver through lecture, exercises, meditation, and hands-on training.

Each course offers theory, exercises, meditation and hands-on training. The basic curriculum courses are 30 hours each. Courses may be taken independently or as part of a complete study. All instructors follow the same curriculum, making it possible for students to follow the program at many locations around the world.

The BEGINNING level introduces the concept of Chi, Yin and Yang, the 12 meridians and some major tsubos (acupoints). The course focuses on feeling the flow of Chi in the body and learning the natural movements central to Ohashiatsu for giving a full-body session. In the second part of the Beginning level, the study of the meridian system and its relationship to the Five Elements reveals how our appearance, habits, preferences, emotions and attitudes are all examples of our effort to be in harmony with our natural self.

Frances Farmer is well known for her qualities as a Shiatsu therapist and has been teaching for the Ohashi Institute since 2002. She has also studied Nutrition, Massage therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tai Chi, movement, and dance in Sri Lanka, China, and the United States.

So it seems this is based on TCM from the above. How does it differ from other Asian forms. With the movements performed it appears to have a connection to martial arts forms. Can you explain a bit deeper?

Yes, like all/most Shiatsu forms, it is based on Chinese Medicine principals. I believe Ohashiastu is unique in that it is performed like a dance. "Initially developed to keep the “giver’s” body healthy, the relaxed state of the giver actually makes it more effective and more comfortable for the receiver." It is like Tai Chi (and most likely other martial arts forms) in that the movements are initiated from the dantien/hara.

I do a martial arts modality from Korea. The Therapist moves a lot and uses moves that leverage and rotate. Also the Dantien is used for strength and energy work. This sounds very interesting. A number of Asian modalities come from Martial Arts and have great body mechanics.

Sounds great. What do you call the Korean form? Is it done on the floor or table?
