Interesting topic as I just read an article about Kumus in the May Issue of Kumus Talk Story.

Mahalo Barbara for posting the article.

I have heard many wonderful things about the teachings of Maka'ala.  It is also my understanding that the honor of a name gets handed down to one.  I have been training students in lomi from a more traditional aspect and I have been given the name by my hawaiian kahu of Kumu Ku'uleialoha. Prior to that I would never utilize the title even though I have been teaching.   I honestly have a humble challenge in putting kumu before my name, although many say I should so others have the respect.

I agree with his philosophy and thoughts on teachers. I have been teaching for over 20 years but only the last 6 in Lomi.  I always aspire to the growth I can also gain from my students while allowing them to find their path for healing.

I continue to learn from the hawaiian elders and will always be guided through humble gratitude of their love for this healing art.

I do respect the lineage and culture and thoroughly enjoyed Maka'ala's article.
In humble gratitude and Aloha

Thank you Barbara and Maka'ala Yates. This is how I understand the role of a teacher. My Hwal Bup Do teacher is humble and helps those who ask. He never introduces himself with a title. But those that know him refer to him as Master Yun in respect for his skills and what he gives. It is this way with real teachers, I believe. It is about honoring the source of knowledge and those who have guided us to it.

Very nice article.

Aloha all,

My kumu lomi, Maka'ala Yates recently published an article online about the use of the term kumu lomi.  He describes how "kumu" was used as he was growing up in Kona on the Big Island.  He also shares his reflections on the recent use of the term "kumu" by people both Hawaiian and non Hawaiian that differs from the way it was used in his tradition.

Read the article here: http://manaola.wordpress.com/2011/07/23/kumu-a-title-of-fact-or-fic...

I would love to hear feedback from some of you in this group on this subject.

If you are ever in Germany, I recommend you get a Lomilomi massage. It is very popular and you can find practitioners in many cities and hamlet. The style is a bit different from here in the USA and can go 2 or 3 hours if you can afford it. They do much more with sliding their arms under the body. I loved that they flip you over effortlessly so there is no tightening of muscles to move during the massage. Ho'oponopono is a big part of the imported Hawaiian culture there.

Aloha lomilomi group,

Do you have an inspirational lomilomi story that you would be willling to share on my website?  I have a special section where my site visitors can tell their own stories.  You can even include a photo and/or lilnk to your own website if you'd like.  Please check it out at  http://www.lomilomi-massage.org/lomilomi-stories.html.  I'd love to include your inspirational story on my website!

I've also recently added 3 short videos of Kumu Dr. Maka'ala Yates, DC - Mana Lomi founder - to my site.  In two he is sharing his mana'o in circle and in the other he is teaching bodywork.  See them at http://www.lomilomi-massage.org/lomi-lomi-gallery.html.

I hope to hear from some of you!!

aloha,
