Initial conversation

In trying get referals from doctors or lawyers. I have been doing some reading on getting referrals. But from what i have read, there doesn't seem to be much information on what the conversation should consist of. I know you have to see yourself to the person on the other side. But is there some information out there about how the conversation should/could be conducted? Or does anyone have any experience they are willing to share
