How do you prepare your students to take the MBLEx exam?

It's a relatively new exam and there isn't much out there to help....I have tried Massage prep.com, Massage nerd...What do you do in your review classes or in the classroom to prep them??

FYI - I was one of the original group of "subject matter experts" who helped the FSMTB decide what knowledge an entry level massage practitioner (regardless of modality) needed to protect "public safety" and who proposed suitable test questions. At present, I have no connection to the FSMTB. From this perspective, I recommend you decide for yourself what to teach based on a review of the following webpages:

Then you and your students should do fine (pass easily - just so long as they don't suffer too much from anxiety when taking written tests).

The best thing you can do is take the exam yourself. Then you'll know exactly how to prepare your students for the exam.

I took it several months ago- so I've done that too :) Just looking for fresh ideas. I've made paper mock tests and like I said, the massage prep.com....

All of our instructors here have taken either the MBLEx or th NCE. We have developed a bank of questions over the years with over three thousand questions. Once the students are enrolled they have the opportunity to get online and take a 20, 50, or 100 question timed practice exam that pulls randomly from the bank. We require the students pass a 100 question exam with a 75% or better before signing them up for either of the big exams.

So far, we're using the MBLex prep exam that you can buy at bookstores here. All of our students have passed since spring of last year ::knock on wood:: The business questions concern me ( I teach business) and that seems to be the part a majority of the students do less stellar on. Most of the questions I hear second hand from former students have to do with taxes and reporting income.

I developed four practice exams (each exam contains 100 questions).

You have to register for them, but they are free.

Go to:

https://evolve.elsevier.com/cs/Satellite/StudentHome?Audience=Student

In the upper right hand corner is a search box.

Type in “Salvo”

Click on “Register” under “Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, 2nd edition" (its a yellow book).

After you register, look on your home page under “Resources” for the book title and click on it.

Then select any chapter folder (there are 15).

Then select “Review Questions – Certification and Licensing Exam”

The biggest issue is teach students HOW to take multiple choice exams. Each question is a problem to solve requiring clinical reasoning skills. Regardless of how many practice tests a student takes THEY WILL NOT FIND THE SAME QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THE EXAMS MBLEX INCLUDED. I write Mosby's Massage Therapy Review and talk with many people about this issue. Students need to learn terminology so they can interpret the questions. When studing they need to know why the wrong answers are wrong more than what is the right answer. They need to learn to think through the question. To study terminology read and memorize the glossary. Make flash cards. LEARN THE MEANING OF WORD PARTS AND MEDICAL TERNIMOLOGY. Remember though that the questions that appear on licensing and certification exams are usually NOT level 1 definition questions. Instead you have to be able to define all the words in the question and all possible answers to be able to FIGURE OUT what is the best response.

After tutoring students for the last 3 years, I have written 2 study guides for passing the MBLEx. One is a question and answer study guide and the other is a medical terminology/pathology study guide. http://www.gtorres.weebly.com

I mentor students who move to Texas from another state and need to take an exam in order to practice in Texas. The book that I utilize is Laura Allen's "Plain and Simple Guide to Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Exams." During the mentoring sessions we also talk about general test taking skills as well as specific questions that they may have regarding sample questions on the exam. Laura's "Guide" is a great book. I highly recommend it. It's the best book I've seen on test preparation. It's user friendly and very helpful. It's available through Amazon.
