Guidance on using "tear off" posters for advertising

Being fresh out of school, I am researching various ways to reach my target clients, related to my specific skill set.  I'm wondering your guidance concerning the effectiveness and personal safety issues with posting informative "tear off contact #" fliers on Community bulletin boards in places like health food stores, clinical offices and the like.
