Welcome to the group, Kent. Good to see you here! Am doing my best to give AMMA Therapy a respectable presence here in the west. Maybe this is what the Sohns intended -- to take this ancient system of healing beyond the college walls and bring it to people who wouldn't otherwise have the chance to know about it?

Hi Maria,
Nice to see this discussion on the web here. I moved out to Wisconsin back in 1995 and have been practicing and teaching Amma Therapy in the midwest now for 14 years. Mrs Sohn was out to visit us at our center and gave a wonderful weekend workshop with Anneke Young helping. Anneke also taught a segment on yoga. It's great to hear about you "doing the work" as Dr. Sohn would say, and bringing it out west. There certainly isn't enough people pushing to keep this style going.

I'd like to post an update to my website for the AMMA Therapy(R) workshops:

http://kiraholistic.com/studentseminars/ammatherapyinstruction.html

If this link doesn't work, you may go to www.kiraholistic.com, then select "student seminars" and then "AMMA Therapy Instruction." More details will be forthcoming on this page in the next few months.

The first Basic Technique workshop will be held next month in Sedona at Your HeartWalk Center. There is a $50 discount for those registering with a partner. There is another $50 savings for those registering before 9/28.

AMMA Therapy(R) is a specific form of Asian bodywork, brought to the United States from Korea by the late Tina Sohn, an extraordinary woman from a royal line of TCM healers, and a healing sensitive who could directly experience the energy of her patients. She founded the New Center, the largest holistic healing center on the east coast, along with her late husband, Dr. Robert Sohn.

AMMA Therapy(R) had been taught at the New Center as part of the basic curriculum for over 20 years. The school, now named the NY College of Health Professions, no longer teaches the technique. Thus the future of AMMA Therapy(R) rests with a handful of teachers and those who are committed to learning it so that this 5,000 year old healing art may continue to live on to benefit others.

AMMA Therapy(R) has been used in spa settings, clinical offices, and in the hospital settings. Massage therapists, holistic nurses, acupuncturists and chiropractors have all studied AMMA Therapy(R). The Sohns chose to trademark the technique to ensure its protection and maintain its purity as it was handed down through Mrs. Sohn's lineage.

If anyone has any questions or anything to share about AMMA Therapy(R) and your experiences with it, I welcome your posts. It is through our shared experiences and learning that we may help each other, our families, and our clients.

Hi Kathy,

No, my friend's name is Anna. I just sent her your website, so you might hear from her. She used to work at Naturopathica, but just moved to another place in Southampton (not sure where). Sounds like you have a great practice! The south fork is a such a beautiful place... I miss it, especially around this time of year. Good luck with your classes!

Hi Kathryn,

Welcome to the AMMA Therapy forum. It's great to hear from other practitioners! Thank you for the nice words.

Where in East Hampton are you? I have a colleague in Southampton who loves AMMA. I'd love to pass your contact info along to her.

AMMA Therapy Basic I will be held in the Red Rock Country of Sedona, AZ from October 30 - November 2, 2009 at Your HeartWalk Center on Hwy 179.

AMMA Therapy® is a 5,000 year old system of healing, originating in Korea and brought to the United States by the late Mrs. Tina Sohn, descendant of a royal line of TCM healers and a healing sensitive who could directly experience the energy of others. Along with her late husband, Dr. Robert Sohn, they founded the Wholistic Health Center on Long Island, the largest center of its kind on the east coast, now known as the New York College of Health Professions. AMMA Therapy® was also taught to acupuncture students at the college as well as Wholistic Nursing students who have integrated the technique into the hospital setting. The Sohns co-authored what is said to be the most comprehensive text on Asian bodywork: AMMA Therapy®, A Complete Textbook of Oriental Bodywork and Medical Principles.

AMMA Therapy® offers your clients a complete form of therapy, incorporating bodywork, Chinese diet, and concepts from Qi Gong and T’ai Chi Chuan. It is based on the Eight Principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Five Element Theory. The technique’s focus on the Five Elements places a high importance on the vital role of the emotions in healing. An AMMA Therapy® session completely embraces the notion of treating body, mind, and spirit.

At its most basic level, AMMA Therapy® addresses structural imbalances such as neck and back pain. At the advanced level, AMMA Therapy® also benefits conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, digestive problems, PMS, menopause, low immune function, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and headaches.

As the therapist is taught how to direct energy from the Dan Tien (the hara), this therapy is easy on your body and reenergizes you along with your client.

Instructor: Maria Troia, MSEd, LMT, NCTMB, CH

Maria Troia is a former instructor of AMMA Therapy® and a student clinic supervisor at the NY College of Health Professions. She has the permission of the current trademark holder to continue to teach AMMA Therapy® independently. She is also approved by NCBTMB as a CE provider (# 450883-08).

$500 (32 contact hours) on or before 9/26/09
(After 9/26 tuition is $550)
