Networking in general is a great way to build a business. If you are talking about using Twitter, facebook etc - I think they are a bit waste of time except for Twitter I can put a feed on my website and then update it daily and let people know when I have openings.

Yes, Yes. Funny I was posting as you were posting. What is social, I feel it is common to consider all of what you listed in "social networking sites". I like the new Coleman Camping Gear advertisement campaign...."The Original Social Network", sitting around a fire and talking to friends.
I like facebook. I have a big fan base and it is a great way to stay in contact.here is one of my facebook accounts, http://www.facebook.com/AltitudeMassage

Julie, I think you are either very misinformed about the effectiveness of social sites or you're putting them down in order to promote your over-priced website business.
No it isn't about promoting my websites although I can do much more by adding content to my website than playing around with shooting in the dark with social networking. I have tried social networking and it just doesn't compare to writing quality content on my site which isn't overpriced considering the amount of clients it gets me every week. I get steady calls each week without doing much. It is just much more effective use of my time. I stay in contact with people who have visited my site by sending out a regular email newsletter. I would rather have people on my own website than clicking on ads that might come up when they are on here or getting distracted with everything else.

Yes I promote websites with Site Build it! but only because it works. I now only work 2 days a week because of the businesses I have been able to create online using it. There isn't anything that compares that I have found that works and yes I have tried many.
Facebook in particular is much too personal. It has been a great way to connect with old high school friends but I don't want my clients to know who my high school friends are. Setting up fan pages or business pages aren't separate enough for me and confidentiality. I actually set up a separate page for my massage practice builder groups at facebook. I have probably about 100 friends but have 2000 subscribers to my newsletter which is a much better way to get out info rather than waiting for people to look at their facebook updates.

It is just about the best use of my time- that is all. If you can show me how facebook is working to get 5 people a week calling you for a massage then I am all ears - I would love to know.

I somehow thought this was going on the discussion thread about social networking but it somehow created it's own thread-oops

Julie
I feel you both are right to a degree. To me social networking is "networking". Someone wanted to tag "social" on and tie networking to the existing groups out there to raise attention to the issue of networking. We all network socially as we go through our day, if we want business. Ain't this a great site? Thanks Julie for creating this thread.

I had meant for this to be a reply in the discussion at

and it somehow got started as a new thread which I wasn't intending for that to happen...

Personally, I've tried to network on Facebook and Twitter with no luck.
On Facebook I'm getting quite a lot of 'friends', but no clients from it. Perhaps it might be better if I create a Facebook page?
As far as Twitter, it was not only a waste of time, but EXTREMELY dentrimental to my business and I was forced to close my account....Too many 'followers' prostituting themselves and posting extremely offensive material. Although I was able to block them, I did not like the fact that Twitter added these people automatically to my feed. It got to the point that I was having to go in every day and 'police' my own site. I have no time for that.
I think the only way Twitter would work is if you actually HAVE clients who are following you.
What I would like to know is how to GET a client from these social networking groups?
Any suggestions that anyone might have to help with this would be appreciated!

Could well be on another page!

I could have sworn though that it was here...as Laurie and I were working through the Facebook issues.

We do a lot of social networking, it complements our face to face networking beautifully! It also is a FANTASTIC way to inform our clients of more of our specialties, services and drive them to our website. I connect personally with clients and local networking small business colleagues, Facebook in particular has been a GREAT way for clients to introduce me to friends of theirs that they are referring to our clinic and our therapists. WE LOVE FACEBOOK. Having said that, we also have a lot of contacts on LinkedIn, but it just isn't as dynamic as facebook. We have our personal profiles and our business page, which clients and friends interact with almost inter-changeably.  We were wavering a little in the beginning between whether to use fb for business, or have more freedom to post to our friends and family. Now we do have some lists of family, but in general, we end up posting much of our content universally (public, even!), except for exclusively business posts, which we share with health professionals.

Our business page is:  http://www.facebook.com/gtstherapeutics

and my personal profile is http://www.facebook.com/tiffanyblackden  ... in case anyone wants to see how we use them. I use Twitter for fun, but the only benefit I've found is for networking and when local aggregates retweet our promotions and local events. We also share a lot of our business and marketing experience on our Professional Massage Network page,  http://www.facebook.com/promassagenet
