Spirituality. Does it have anything to do with the profession of massage and bodywork therapy? Or are we obligated to keep spirituality out of our work? Let's share our thoughts on this important topic here in this forum group.

Since I am new to this group, I thought I'd share my philosophy on my massage practice.

Mind, body, and spirit are all tied together.  My goal is for my clients to achieve peace of mind, tranquility of body, and a calm spirit.  For this to happen, I rely on God to be the center & heart of my practice.  I pray for His Spirit to be present in my practice, I open myself up for Him to work through my touch If He so chooses, and I pray for each client (silently) before I conclude their massage.  I believe He gave me the talent and ability to do massage and He helped me do so well in school.  I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Him, and I believe He has a plan and a purpose for me and my massage practice.

I believe healing work is spiritual.  How we handle daily life is spiritual to me.

I believe that everything we do is a spirtual act--chop wood, carry water!

Thank you for inviting me to join the group Nancy. Spirituality is in everything we do, especially in the healing of a client's energy field.

Thank you for all you do!

Blessings,

Shirley

Well said.  Here's the thing as it's the same with most everyone:  We are One, not two or three or.....etc., etc.  Similar with Mind and Body.  They are naturally one, yet we artificially seperate them.

Here's the most important point imho, when folks can agree with the above, or when we say, "It's there.  Period."  True, it is there, yet are we aware of it?  What's our Awareness level, or, our Attentive Capacity?

"We are at our best, allowing our work to be guided by Grace."  Another good one, although I'm unsure what Grace is.  Call it God, the Will of God, the Spirit, Intent, Buddha Nature, etc., etc.  I agree!  I just say, going with the flow.

Letting Go.  Being unconcerned.  It's not what occurs to us but how we act, re-act or perceive what's occuring to us.

Thanks again for this group, Nancy!

Nancy, thank you for the invitation to join this group and this discussion.  For me the term "spirituality" indicates that there is something (an energy, a vibration, etc.) that is way beyond me that is usually referred to as "spirit" and means many different things to different people, probably depending on their background and upbringing and culture.  However, in whatever way it is described or referenced, I tend to believe that we are fundamentally referring to the same thing.  Some call it Chi, some call it life force, etc. etc.  And it has an intelligence far beyond our own.

From my training with Dr. Milton Trager, and the experiences I have had in over 30 years, it is hard for me to conceive of spirituality being separated from massage or bodywork that has any lasting effects.  To me, if it not present, then the client is being treated like a side of beef, rather than a person.

I believe that for any level of true healing to happen, we must learn to allow this energy, by whatever name, to come through us.  If we think it is coming from us, we are buying into our own ego.  In my teaching, I recently I have been calling it "All that is", and that by being with that concept, it helps to bring me and students into the space of allowing that energy to come through.  I have a lot more to say, but this is enough for now.
