Hi Marsha,

I too am a surviver of incest and sexual abuse becaue of growing up in an alcoholic home. I have done many hours of deep work to heal myself. The first massages I had several years ago, I would fight the therapists for months and could not relax. With time and patience and being able to share my story of survivial I am no longer a victim. It takes a lot for a surviver of abuse to be able to recieve a massage. If one has not been their they have no idea. Compassion, compassion compassion is the key!!!

Hi Everybody,
So glad to know that there is a group of interested massage therapists that work with trauma issues. I have been in practice for more than 20 years and have spent much of my practice time with clients recovering from trauma or neglect issues.

Have just launched a new website that I invite you to visit. I would appreciate your comments or feedback.

Many thanks for the invitation Chris and I look forward to meeting you all (through this discussion group) in the future,
P.

Hello,
I am glad to see that this group exists. Several of my clients over the years are survivors of Abuse/Trauma. Massage has made a significant difference in their healing. Working with this clientele has also made me a much better Therapist. I am more attuned to my clients responses and more aware of each choice I make with them. I look forward to reading what it share here as I know there is always more wisdom out there...

Marsha,
I also offer a Compassionate Touch training/ethics. I do it live but also have it online. There are some great exercises you can do with your clients/yourself. Some interesting boundary exercises too.

Thank you. I am on my way to the book store. Please keep me in mind if you come across anything that might help me or my clients.

Marsha

I am not shocked at all that you are a massage therapist. I have seen many in my trainings that openly share their history . Becoming a therapist has made them more sensitive to the needs of those abused and there is a huge population. They have also used bodywork to help them heal.

Somato Emotional release is often a helpful tool for this kind of work. There are many other "branded" modalities as well. There is a book by Dr. Clyde Ford called Compassionate Touch and also another by Ben Benjamin, Sex, Intimacy and Touch and the Courage To heal is another book. All of these are great tools for you and your clients.

I am a massage therapist here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I was a victim of incest for over 8 yrs.....then after 17 yrs the man was convicted. At the age of 25 I was raped. I have had several instructors tell me that they are shocked that I do massages. I would love to take a class in reference to the above...but the only one I can find is in Colorado. Anyone out there that can help me in this area.

Greetings.

I am a researcher with an interest in this topic, but I'm not a massage therapist myself. I hope you don't mind if I lurk here or chime in occasionally.

I have worked with people who have experienced trauma for several years. Mostly I do chair massage. Looking forward to working with this group.
