Hi, I took orthopedic massage courses from James Waslaski at the World Massage Festival in Panama City Beach, FL in August '08. It was an amazing weekend and I left his classes absolutely mind-blown! Still working at learning the protocol and application of the techniques.

My introduction to bodywork even before massage school was Lauren Berry work. I studied it for several years and the tools are still an important part of my work. However, I try to put them into an evidence based holistic framework. I found that if I tried to think too much I missed clues that I would get if I listened more to my fingers. I now think of myself as a "muscle whisperer".

In trying get referals from doctors or lawyers. I have been doing some reading on getting referrals. But from what i have read, there doesn't seem to be much information on what the conversation should consist of. I know you have to see yourself to the person on the other side. But is there some information out there about how the conversation should/could be conducted? Or does anyone have any experience they are willing to share

Frank ~ i have found that one of our responsibilities is to share with others how effective our work can be for many conditions, and to be careful and not overstate our effectiveness. citing scientific research that validates our work is important to others in healthcare professions. knowing that the research tends to be anecdotal and is not without limitations is also important.

generally, i think massage is becoming more accepted by western science (doctors), but there are many that continue to be very skeptical -- it wasn't taught and isn't part of their experience.

you might have luck by working with hotel concierge that sometimes refer guests with various aches & pains.

    Frank,
I learned a trick that has worked for me. Call the doc's office and schedule a meeting. Ask the doc if you can refer your clients to him/her. Don't ask for referrals, ask for the doc's cards. This has worked well for me.

Hi everyone! I am excited to be involved in such a great group! I am registered in a seminar on orthopedic massage in a couple months and am very excited to broaden my knowledge to include this concept. I also love the Whitney Lowe books! They are so easy to understand and give you great knowledge to add to your toolbelt. If anyone has any suggestions on other books I should read up on prior to my seminar I would appreciate the feedback.
