Massage in a Chiropractic Setting

It is no secret that massage and chiropractic make a dynamic combination. This group is for massage professionals who work in a chiropractic clinic, work on a referral basis with chiropractors, or looking to work in this environment.

Where to look up treatment plans or techniques for specific conditions?

I am wondering where to look up information about treatment plans, massage protocols or techniques for various conditions.  I have been coming across some conditions at work that I honestly don't know what to do to help reduce pain or discomfort.  The biggest being herniated discs.

I currently have a patient w/ herniated L5-S1.  And his muscles are rock solid. (Lats, Obliques, QL, Erectors, Glutes... basically from T-12 down) It takes a bit for him to relax enough for me to do much of anything.  He is bracing himself and guarding so hard that he is basically stiff as a board.  I've only worked on him twice.  And I just don't even know where to begin!

Do you have access to heat packs?  Maybe you can place that on his back for a few minutes to relax his  lower back so that you can get some work done!
