In one of my last posts I talked about the benefits of the acupressure point KI 1, which is located on the bottom of the foot. In that post I mentioned it has the function of helping with insomnia, and just yesterday I was able to help someone who has difficulty sleeping. Within minutes of starting the massage at KI 1 the client was asleep, WOW, what a surprise to both of us. Even after 11 years of doing this work I am still amazed at how fast points work.

As part of a series of ongoing posts I will be discussing the therapeutics of the major acupressure points. This information is the synthesis of my 11+ years practicing Oriental Medicine.

Starting any type of massage, by massaging the feet is a great practice and can prepare the body and mind for the more intense bodywork that is to follow. For more information refer to the post on KI 1.

Lets now review some of my favorite points on the liver meridian, specifically liver 3 (LV 3) and LV 2. Massaging these points can be very useful for headaches and migraines, especially when affecting the eyes or the top of the head. These points are also very good for a variety of pains, as LV 3 has a strong function of increasing circulation of Qi throughout the body.

Liver 3 is located at the proximal junction of the first and second metatarsals, while liver 2 is just proximal to the web on the dorsum, again between the first and second metatarsals.

A great method for beginning any massage is first to massage KI 1, as this calms the mind and embodies the client. Following this, move to LV3 and use thumb circles as you massage down from LV 3 to LV 2. These points help to alleviate held stress throughout the body, ease pain, and improve compromised digestive function when it is stress related.

In summary to begin a foot massage:
1. Massage KI 1 for 3-4 minutes with gentle pressure
2. Move to LV 3 making small thumb circles and slowly move down to LV 2

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jim
