a community of practitioners

If you follow basketball, you it is that time of year, March Madness. As an Iowa resident, I tuned in Thursday to watch the University of Northern Iowa Panthers take on the number one ranked and seeded Kansas Jayhawks.

UNI, the smallest state college, had not beaten a number one ranked team since 1962. Very few people had faith in the underdog when picking their bracket winners. My husband, a UNI alum, did not pick them, Obama did not pick them, and most everyone else in America did not pick them. Well, someone forgot to tell the Panthers they need not show up for the game. The Panthers showed up and led all but 58 seconds of the game. How did they do it? Was it one person who won the game for them? No, it was teamwork.

As individual practitioners we often get a caught up in our own businesses, our own modalites, and our own ways. Maybe we have too much time in a quite room with our own thoughts. So, where am I going with this blog? I am not sure, but I think it is about how I dislike negative comments on forums, blogs, or discussion boards. There is a difference in educating and insulting colleagues. I know it happens on all forums and groups, not just here. The semi-anonymity, or lack of face to face communication, of the internet gives some a reason to throw all manners out the window. However, being rude, offensive, or condescending diminishes us personally and as a group. We need to remember we are here to learn and support each other. We need to remember we are a team.

Many people talk about wanting to see the profession grow and succeed. The massage profession is not going to anywhere if we think we each can do it by ourselves. As individual practitioners we have to work together and support each other if we are going to see massage therapy reach its potential.

Go Panthers!
