What is the Massage in Schools Programme? (MISP)


MISP is a highly successful and professional program of positive touch for children throughout the world. It has currently been implemented into 20 different countries worldwide and is receiving respect and acclaim at an international level.


Mia Elmsäter and Sylvie Hétu created the Massage in Schools Programme (MISP) in 2000, as a means of realizing their vision that every child in the world would receive positive nurturing touch every day.



The MISP is:


  • for children aged 4-12
  • a child-to-child massage program done on the back, neck, arms and head
  • for children to give to each other through their clothes
  • given and received with the child’s permission
  • done only after having obtained official permission from the parents
  • a 10-15 minute daily routine


What are the benefits of Massage in Schools?


Studies and observations have indicated that schools adopting the MISP, and children who take part in
the MISP, experience a range of positive benefits. For example:


  • children become calmer
  • concentration is improved
  • children become more confident
  • it teaches children to respect themselves and others
  • it helps children to distinguish between positive and negative touch
  • it reduces bullying and aggressive behavior

Thank you. We've already had some success implementing it in a few schools in the area. One of our instructor's daughter's ran up to the principle of her school and told him that their school was going to have the program implemented. He was amused enough to give it a try.
