It’s that time; you know the time I’m talking about where everyone suddenly makes a bunch of resolutions for the new year. What is it about a new year that makes us want to change things? Why is it that most new year’s resolutions fail? As far as I can tell this phenomenon has been a long time tradition as evidenced by Mark Twain’s famous quote on the subject:
New Year's Day: Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. ~Mark Twain
So is it wrong to want to make changes in your life? Of course not, though I think the problem lies in how we go about doing it.
Problem: We try to change too many things in too many areas of our lives. Most of us have full busy stressful lives and if we are honest with ourselves we will see that we don’t have enough time for all the changes we mean to make.
Solution: Go easy on ourselves. Seriously. We are far too hard on ourselves and we need to let go and be forgiving of ourselves and others. We can make changes, but instead of a whole laundry list of things we think we need to change, how about replacing that list with simply two things: one in the personal area of our life and one in our professional area of life. For example in my personal life, I will be the first to say that I am terrible when it comes to sending personal correspondence to my relatives who live far away from me. So that could be something that I would want to change. An example in my professional life, I feel like I need to go outside my comfort zone more. A way I can do this is by making a video for the About Me section of my business’ website so my potential clients can feel more comfortable about receiving a massage from me. I honestly believe that small changes can lead to even bigger successes.
Now I know all of wrote about is how to make resolutions when my blog title tells you to forget about setting them and it seems I am giving conflicting information. I promise there is a method to my madness if you just stay with me-and here it is:
The main problem with setting resolutions is that you are doing it all by yourself without any help usually. My solution to this is to set intentions for your year. When you set an intention, you have a certain aim or objective in mind, but you are not doing it alone. You are sharing your intention with God/Universe. Your intention begins with a thought which leads to feelings which then manifest into your life.
In my next blog post, I will share with you tools that will help you with setting intentions. In the meantime you can think about two things in your personal and professional areas of life that you would like to change. And you know what? There is nothing wrong simply accepting and loving yourself and just being you.
Blessings and Good Health,
Lara
