Bizarre Experiment to Prove Homeopathy Worthless

I found this on Twitter. A bunch of skeptics try to commit a mass suicide using homeopathy. In Great Britain, homeopathy is covered under health care benefits. I posted this on the Evidence-Based site as well.

Reminded me of the Jim Jones mass suicide. And--who's to say that any substance, should you take enough of it, or something that you might have an allergy to, couldn't cause death? People have been known to die from an overload of plain old water.

But I think the point of their demonstration was that they could consume large quantities of the homeopathic solutions and be confident that they would have no effect at all, which is what happened.

That is bizarre... There was also a story of Billy Joels daughter overdosing on traumeel - a homeopathic remedy for pain a month or so ago. I always meant to look it up because overdosing would be impossible yet it was on the tv news even. Must have been a slow newsweek or something.

Here's another take on the developments in the U.K that mentions Ernst again.

Also, if anyone listened to Paul Ingraham's talk you'll remember he mentioned Simon Singh - you can get info on the guy off this blog.

I think it's interesting that the ad hominems are flying. Makes me think again of Carl's Baloney Detection list - (see the quick reference here)

You probably have already seen this and it might be old news to you, but I found the account of the science bloggers visit to NCCAM interesting and since part of it addresses homeopathy, I thought I'd throw it on your thread to share with others. Of note is that the NCCAM has not funded any studies in homeopathy in 2 years (although they still accept grant apps for it, you have to wonder if they're just thrown in the trash).

I thought the blog entry was very interesting in other ways as well.
