On April 4th 2009 I had a four wheeler wreck.. Luckily it was not as bad as it could have been (thank you universe!) However, I am still having issues with hematoma on my right upper leg. I still have various knots and deep bruising. It is much better than it was originally, but I am becoming slightly concerned. It seems like the more active I am on my feet ( dancing, long walks, jogs) the more purple it becomes. Once I ease up on long activies, it seems to fade again. I'm very certain I have nerve damage on the inner thigh of the same leg, because the first couple months, I was having stabbing and burning pains in that area. When the accident occured, I went over a ditch. My body flew over the 4 wheeler, but my legs got caught on the handle bars. I guess perhaps it is a very deep bruise, but the on and off again reoccurance of the discoloration has me slightly worried. Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated... thank goodness I didnt have to take much time off of work!!!

In this case, I'd relay this information, directly to a doctor. Immediatley!
One of my best friend's is a nurse physician. She says she believes the soft tissue was greatly damaged, so it might take more than the usually 3-6 months. It is still very much inflamed, because the area is still warm upon touch. It does not hurt however. I have occasional nerve pain in the inner thigh, but it never lasts long.
I would back off activity as much as possible to at least allow it to heal as much as possible. Good luck!

Crap K-slice. I am sorry to hear about your stroke of bad luck! Far be it for me to diagnose but I think you are on the right track, you know your body better than anyone. The best course of action is R.I.C.E......rest- ice- light effleurage compression- elevation. Mix it up with a bit of heat therapy to help flush the dead cells out. Be sure to stay hydrated so as you work to remove the edema and bruising the interstitial tissue and lymph system can at their best. You also might try an herbalist, a mud pack and some of that nasty Chinese medicinal tea will amaze you. As far as the nerve damage goes SEE A DOCTOR!!!!! Keep us updated!

Hi Kerry,

An amazing tool to help assist lymph and stagnant blood drainage from hematomas is kinesio tape. There is a specific applicatation just for this instance. I have had great results with it and if fact just taped a post surgical leg yesterday. If you can find anyone in your area trained to do this I would look them up asap. It will help with the discomfort, edema, and discoloration and won't interfere with any activity/rehab you are taking part in. Since this injury is about 6 months old, you probably won't get drastic results right away but it should help measurably.
thanks lorrie!!!!
I am going to try to upload a couple of pics I took yesterday, this client is a 22 year old male incomplete para who took a digger out of his wheel chair over labor day and fx his femur. He is 4 days post surg with a femoral rodding and plates. This hematoma is almost circumfrencial but he was having the most discomfort on the medial side, moving about in bed, feeling unsupported, and a post surgical "deep ache". I used the usual protocol for "Lymph taping" with the goal of support, decreasing edema and ecchymosis. This application will probabbly stay on for 3 days, I will post another photo after that so you will be able to see how kinesio tape assists with drainage in this instance

Considering this is 6 mo old I can only imagine what they were in the beginning! Let me know if you try kinesio and how it works for you.
Ok, here are the folllow up pics of the hematoma I taped on 9/11, took these earlier today 9/15. You can see how it is clearing the hematoma nicely, but more importantly the comfort level of the client has significantly increased.
