Should Associations and Institutions Be Producing Commercials To Help Their Therapists?

Canada has released some short commercials that will air throughout Canada in the next couple of months. I will try to follow up and see if they were effective.

Do you think commercials might help educate the public some and start working against the TV shows and inuendo being thrown around Hollywood?

I think the public is rapidly gaining a positive image of massage. A national TV campaign would be very expensive. It might get people to try massage. If it was geared to recognizing the association logo as a mark of professionalism it would create greater competition between associations and perhaps confuse the public more.

Word is quickly getting around these days and I see the demand growing. Let's work on our referrals and continuing to expand the base. By mathematical progression we are gaining rapidly.
Great Commericals. I think they will be effective. More and More Schools in this area plus Massage Evny are airing commericals. Too bad the associations are not making commericals to help LMT's. In my opinion they should be the ones educating the public. Just today we had an 89 yr old man and his son come in for massages at Massage Envy Pensacola. They entered the building saying "are you the pretty thing I talked to on the telephone about a massage appointment today". Most of our front end sales staff are just out of High School and were shocked by this greeting. The 89 yr old proceeded into the massage room and once on table tried to buy sex with the therapist. Both the Man and his son were escorted out of the building by the owner. My understanding is that the son calmed down once on the table. The owner made the decision to stop the son's massage in order to get his Dad out of the building because he kept on even in the lobby once the therapist ended the session. Both were made to pay full price. The elder man kept calling Massage Envy a massage parlor. He claims it was his first experience with massage. I don't think so. LMT's need help. Many do not know they have the choice to stop the session. At Massage Envy Pensacola, we all know to stop the sessions if this kind of behavior happens. Our owner does not tolerate it. The elder man did say he did not mean to break the "RULES" He was educated on the fact that he was breaking the law. We are reminded over and over again during staff meetings and traings sessions to report this kind of behavior and stop the sessions. Too bad those who work as Independent contractors do not have someone continually reminding them. We all need it over and over again as a reminder on what to do. The public needs it as an opportunity for education as to what massage is and is not.
Thanks for posting this MIke. I am in Canada, but I had heard nothing about this. Of course, I am not in British Columbia and this particular ad is produced by the BC association and aimed specifically at BC clients. I wonder
if there will be anything similar in the other provinces?

I do think it's a good commercial and definitely would help to combat some of the negative stereotypes being perpetuated by Hollywood
Thanks Lee.

3,000 hours! That's a lot of time for basic certification.
Don't blink.. a lot would like to head in that direction.

Something strange is happening on this site. There are obviously TWO contributors named "LEE"
The "other" Lee said "3000 hrs - that's a lot for basic certification". I did not post that remark.
BC, Canada has had a 3,000 requirement for many years. Ontario and Newfoundland have had 2,200 hours for many years, although we have changed from an hour-based program to a competency-based requirement

This is the standard requirement in the regulated provinces in Canada

Hi Lee, not strange. You get an email notice because you responded to the thread also.

Thanks MIke. I was briefly confused by seeing someone respond under "my" name, but of course Lee is a common name and it's not surprising that there are two of us!
There ya go!
