How Do You Ground Yourself?

Do you think about the connection between the earth and your feet when you wake up and put your feet on the ground? Well you should, especially if you are going to be working in someone else’s energy field. You are an electromagnetic being and you ground energy just like an appliance that is plugged into an electrical outlet.

Since I have had lumbar fusion surgery, I am happy to report that I can feel the ground again. It may not sound like a big deal but it is if your legs and feet have been numb and tingly for 2 ½ years. So now that I can feel the earth underneath me, I want to bring up the subject of grounding.

Grounding has to do with living inside your body and having a connection with the earth. Think of grounding as being anchored to the ground. Grounding allows for an inflow of energy to feed your bodily systems and an outflow of energy to release excessive charge in your body. Assessing the energy of the earth is essential when working with other people’s energy.

As a bodyworker, you should find a connection with the earth and feel the energy in your feet. Your feet have minor chakras that bring in and distribute energy in your body. In the morning before you get out of bed, rotate your ankles 50 times in each direction. When you put your feet on the ground, imagine energy flowing up through the inner arches of your feet. Direct the energy up through your core and take 3 deep breaths. Pay attention to your connection with the ground as you go through your day!

What are some ways to ground yourself?
1) Physical activity
2) Relaxation exercises
3) Eat food that is grounding and not over stimulating
4) Take a bath
5) Receive a massage
6) Stand in the grass barefoot and feel the earth underneath your feet
7) Engage in an activity that involves the senses
8) Listen to a CD of drumming
9) Wear grounding stones such as hematite, obsidian, or tigers eye
10) Get out into nature

Yoga 4 UR Hands
A Mantra to open your heart

Sit with your spine aligned. Bend your elbows as you place your hands in front of the chest. Your palms will face up with the fingers spread. Keep the hands relaxed as you stretch the fingers wide. See your heart area opening as pink light illuminates this chakra.
Take deep breaths as you repeat the mantra OM 10 times.

Using awareness is the key to injury prevention.

Ask yourself these questions?
• How is my breathing?
• Are my arms hanging freely from my body?
• Am I behind my stroke?
• Where are my shoulders?
• Is my power coming from my back foot?
Remember, laziness with your body mechanics can create injury.

Be powerful by using awareness and being inside your own body.

When you register for the World Massage Festival check out Self Care 4 Bodyworkers- Creating Peace with Your Hands. I will be teaching a 2 Hour Class on Friday Jun 18, 2010.
This class is intended to provide techniques and ideas to prevent injury. I will explain how to identify sensations of discomfort in the body before an injury occurs. I will teach self-care by explaining how to use nutrition to fuel and balance the body, perform self-massage, set healthy boundaries, protect his/her energy by grounding and centering. Awareness will be brought to the therapist's body with scapular stabilization, core stabilization, and grounding through the legs.

The first hour will be lecture on why one should use self-care, how to bring awareness to one's body, and what self-care techniques can be utilized. The second hour I will be showing the therapist yoga techniques to incorporate when doing bodywork.

I registered for the World Massage Festival. Did you? I can't believe all the great teachers and classes that are available. This Festival is a great source for continuing education and at a great price. Register soon before all the lodging and classes are filled up!

Injury prevention means to prevent or reduce the likelihood of an injury to the body before it occurs. Prevention of an injury is possible with personal body maintenance. No one goes to work planning on getting injured but it is likely to occur, at least once in your career. Some things cannot be avoided however you can take prevention measures to keep the odds in favor of your health.

An athlete would do a warm up before they start their workout. A 5-10 minute walk or jog will raise your core temperature and pre-lubricate your joints. Next, it is time to stretch. Stretching helps make the muscle more flexible and more able to do the strenuous work that needs to be done. Failing to stretch can lead to the muscle belly shortening which can interfere with supporting muscles, joints, and tendons.

Prevention steps to maintain optimum health:

• Treat minor injuries before they become chronic
• Avoid performing massage when you are in pain or fatigued
• Allow time for warm up and cool down
• Monitor warning signs
• Receive massage and treatments to help body recover
• Maintain good posture
• If something hurts, stop doing the activity!
• Perform cardiovascular fitness to increase circulation
• Avoid doing activities with the hands that cause strain
• Allow breaks in between clients
• Have a self-care strategy set in place
• Take responsibility for your own health

Massage therapists think of themselves as caregivers and do not focus on the physical strain their body goes through while they perform their work. Self-care is done on one’s “free-time” when it should be considered as something that must be done to prepare and heal the body from physical activity. Injuries do happen. Realize how physical your job is and have body maintenance steps in place before an injury occurs. If an injury happens, take the time to heal completely so you can enjoy this career for many years to come.

Warning signs for a repetitive strain injury:
• Stiffness
• Weakness
• Fatigue
• Difficulty using body part
• Waking up with pain
• Tingling, numbness, and burning
• Recurring Pain
• Lack of endurance
• Feeling of heaviness in body part

Keeping a positive attitude, time , persistence, an excellent doctor, proper rehablitation, and various self-cae strategies.

Try Yamuna body rolling for self-care. I roll my own aches and pains away. Also, I took the whole Yamuna Body Rolling Series and do body rolling on my clients. It helps to realign their body through lengthening and compression work. I have fun doing it too! I especially like the green ball!
