Injury Prevention ans Self-Care for Bodyworkers

How Do You Ground Yourself?

Do you think about the connection between the earth and your feet when you wake up and put your feet on the ground? Well you should, especially if you are going to be working in someone else’s energy field. You are an electromagnetic being and you ground energy just like an appliance that is plugged into an electrical outlet.

Since I have had lumbar fusion surgery, I am happy to report that I can feel the ground again. It may not sound like a big deal but it is if your legs and feet have been numb and tingly for 2 ½ years. So now that I can feel the earth underneath me, I want to bring up the subject of grounding.

Grounding has to do with living inside your body and having a connection with the earth. Think of grounding as being anchored to the ground. Grounding allows for an inflow of energy to feed your bodily systems and an outflow of energy to release excessive charge in your body. Assessing the energy of the earth is essential when working with other people’s energy.

As a bodyworker, you should find a connection with the earth and feel the energy in your feet. Your feet have minor chakras that bring in and distribute energy in your body. In the morning before you get out of bed, rotate your ankles 50 times in each direction. When you put your feet on the ground, imagine energy flowing up through the inner arches of your feet. Direct the energy up through your core and take 3 deep breaths. Pay attention to your connection with the ground as you go through your day!

What are some ways to ground yourself?
1) Physical activity
2) Relaxation exercises
3) Eat food that is grounding and not over stimulating
4) Take a bath
5) Receive a massage
6) Stand in the grass barefoot and feel the earth underneath your feet
7) Engage in an activity that involves the senses
8) Listen to a CD of drumming
9) Wear grounding stones such as hematite, obsidian, or tigers eye
10) Get out into nature

An important tip for the wrists...envision a zipper extending from the forearm to the palm. If the wrist goes into deviation then the zipper will stick. It is a good idea to keep a straight line from the forearm to the fingers to reduce strain on the wrist joint.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to put in a word for the benefits of doing a regular trade with other massage therapists. I've done many trades with different therapists and have finally found someone who does amazing work and willing to do get on the schedule for a regular exchange. Her appreciation of my work is a regular confidence booster as well. And of course I feel much better because I'm receiving regular massage.
This from the New York Times today:

Your hands and feet are the site of minor chakras. Your hand chakras gather and distribute energy. Activate this energy by stretching your fingers and wrists, opening and closing your hands, and circling your wrists. Have a great day!

Latest self-care tip on Massage Magazine.
Just so you know. I do take my own advice. My first rib was out and pinching a nerve so I decided to cancel some massages to let the inflammation subside. If you take time out to heal, most of the time, it won't come back to cause you pain later.

Did you know that carpal tunnel could be caused from excessive tension in the shoulder, arm, and hand in addition to repetitive motion? When you use intense focus while manipulating tissue, especially when the rest of your body is not in motion, your body becomes an extension of your tool instead of the other way around. Keep the feeling of fluidity from the body to the hands to the body on the table. Learn to stabilize your body in each zone and find your heart to hand connection when doing massage.

The activation of the transverse abdominis should be done before bending over or reaching overhead, especially with heavy loads. To activate the transverse abdominis, draw your belly button up and in toward your spine. A little trick is to get a string and tie it around your waist at the belly button level. Draw your abdomen up and in toward your spine and then let it out about three-quarters of the way and tie the string at that point. It should be tight, but not too tight. If your transverse abdominus (TV) relaxes and is not engaged, the string will tighten up and you will receive immediate feedback.

Stand in MT Pose and feel all four corners of your feet. The four corners are the big toe mound, the little toe mound, inner heel, and outer heel. Imagine the four corners like tires on a car. All four tires should contact the ground equally. Much like the wear and tear caused by misalignments of the tires, the feet can create imbalances in different parts of your body and cause hip, knee, and back problems if not aligned properly. As you go on with your day today take notice of how your feet touch the ground and try to make all four corners contact the ground equally.

Did you know that fascial continuity between the floor of your mouth and base of your cranium could affect the central gravity line of your body? Tension in your face and jaw can create tension in the suboccipitals. This pattern of tension can travel down the spine and to the sacrum. Tension around the sacrum can prevent the feet from being securely grounded.

Take a moment to relax the mandible and let it hang while feeling its weight. Let your cheeks feel longer and fuller. Become aware of your tongue. Allow it to be flat and broad while resting against the floor of your mouth. Notice how relaxing your tongue affects your throat and breathing. Take a few breaths as you notice the reduced tension in your face, tongue, and throat.

Have a great day!

The art of yoga teaches us how to focus and generate energy throughout the body. Think of lining your body up and delivering your massage strokes with a straight line of energy. This will help you reserve your energy and deliver pressure more efficiently.
