Who would you like to study oncology massage with and where would you like to study? 3 Replies

I'm wondering what kind of experiences you have had in your oncology massage studies? It would be nice if we could all share information about our classes. I'd love to hear from the teachers as well as the students. What do you like best about your classes? What are the most important points to focus on during an oncology massage session? What would you like learn in addition to the knowledge you have already gained about oncology massage? Where do you go to get accurate information regarding…Continue

Has anyone seen the lastest article in Massage Magazine, " Medical Massage,How Touch Benefits Cancer patients"? 6 Replies

I am looking to discuss this article as I feel it is missing a great deal of information that is already available.  Not a mention of Gayle MacDonald's book, " Medicine Hands," or of any of the established educational/certification programs presently offered throughout the United States.Too bad the authors missed a great opportunity to show they did their research.Continue

They can receive healing touch, reflexology. swedish massage therapy, we also do Lymphatic drainage which has been very helpfull to those patients…Continue

Here's something well worth listening to... Tracy Walton's discussion about oncology massage for caretakers. http://www.massagetherapyradio.com/mtfoundationtracywalton

Hi FLorence,
An excellent place to start is with Gayle MacDonald's book, "Medicine Hands". It is written specifically for massage therapists working with clients with cancer. Other references: Gayle's website, S4OM.org, and tracywalton.com.

It is safest to start with a light massage and for a shorter duration. No direct pressure on or near the site of the tumor.

The general benefits of massage for people with cancer are reduced anxiety, reduced depression, reduced fatigue, and improved sleep. The benefits of just being touched are tremendous, so a hand or foot massage can be extemely helpful.

A new priest just arrived at our church and while telling us of his background mentioned that, in June, a cancerous mass was found on his heart. He is since that time vegan and said that he could not do chemo or radiation. I would like to volunteer to help him, if I can. What specific questions must I ask to be sure I do no harm. I would only do light, relaxation massage. Thank you all for your dedication to this field. What meaningful work you do.

Susan, I am so sorry about your client. I know it is hard. I lost a special client with a deep connection as well. The real kicker was that her death and funeral were 5 years to the day after my sister's death. It was kind of like losing her again..
And now my dad is facing terminal cancer, just a year after my mom went thru breast cancer treatment. The one thought that continually sustains me is, "Nothing real ever dies - only names, forms, illusions..." and also, "spirit moves in and out of form, but it always IS..."
Be brave, set sail straight into the wind, and try to move thru the grief. You can't go around it, and you can only outrun it for a little while.. my heart is with you..
