Shelley,
I worked on a German Shepard who was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. At the time, I was learning Bowen Therapy which is a gentle cross-fiber technique...so I thought I would try my 'new' learned technique on him. Bowen Therapy is known to be very effective on animals. This dog immediately fell asleep...it was amazing! And then he kept rolling around and stretching. I saw the owner of this dog about a month later, she said her dog's gait improved tremendously after the treatment...even the vet was amazed, because he didn't have any signs of hip dysplasia after the treatment! I couldn't follow up with this case because owner and dog moved away, but this is one of those cases that shows how we can really help our animal friends.

Thanks for all the detailed information, Nickie! It is great to see the progression of animal massage applications to include so many modalities. As a school owner and CE provider, I am looking for someone who would like to teach an animal massage class-particularly with a structural integration emphasis.

Thanks Megan, I'll look into both of those. I'm so grateful to have a group like this as a resource. Now I have one more. Have any of you worked with dogs who have dysplasia? I was helping a friend out who has a pet sitting business. One of her dogs, a four year old, 167 pound Newfie, is one of her clients. I went to let him out for a potty break and observed a funny gait that looked suspicious to me. I alerted the owner who took him in to be xrayed and sure enough he has dysplasia in his back left hip. At this point the owner doesn't want to proceed with surgery. She has started him on a glucosomine, supplement and has me come do massage twice a week. I have called his vet's office and sent off all of my soap notes of what I have been doing asking for some guidance but I have not received anything back. Have any of you worked with dogs who have dysplasia or do you know what the contraindications might be. He LOVES the massage, doesn't appear to be in pain, gets around pretty good, maybe just a little slow.

Again, thanks for any help or suggestions.

Regarding canine lymphatic drainage, when we teach MLD at the Northwest School of Animal Massage, it's based on the teachings of Dale Perry for humans, but also he came there some years ago and taught us on the horses, too. The MLD is taught in the rehab classes now at NWSAM. The anatomy books by Peter Goody (dog and horse) have great diagrams and text on the lymphatic system. Does any of that help, Shelley?

My dog loves massage and reiki. Haven't offered it as a service, but I've tried to enroll in classes. I'm more interested in dogs and cats than equine massage. Glad to find you all here.

That's great Andrea! One of my own goals is to put more attention into this group to help it be useful for all of us. Meanwhile, great to at least connect with like-minded folks!

I am very much into animal massage, I am not practicing it yet (at least not professionaly) but I do want to add it to my list. It is my goal to have equine and canine massage as part of my practice in the future! I am so glad I found this group!

There's a daily internet radio show called Horse Tip Daily with a very short tip offered by a variety of experts on a variety of topics. I offer a tip related to horse massage every few weeks or so, and I've also really enjoyed listening to lots of the other tips, with horse topics ranging from training to photography to traveling with your horse and many more. Here's a link to the recording of my latest tip about massage for the jaw muscles (from last month already). I just got several more recorded for the coming months, which I look forward to sharing with you as they're aired! (Just scroll down till you see the "listen now" box.)
