Compartmental syndrome-a severe case

One of my teacher's has a brother who has been in the hospital for the last 6 weeks with compartmental syndrome in both the arms and the legs.  The doctor has no idea how, but guesses it might have been a virus.  The man has had surgery opening up his arms and legs skin so the muscles are released.  He's in tremendous pain.  We've done Reiki and some light lymphatic drainage. The MLD helped his arms, but his legs are still swollen.
At this point, he's under a death sentence or an amputation sentence in the best case.  Any suggestions of techniques that could help his suffering?
