massage and bodywork professionals

a community of practitioners

Hello All

I am a new student set to start classes in about two weeks. I am also a LPN. I am not making a career change just adding to. I was wondering if anyone had any good study tips or resources they would like to share. I am also wondering if anyone is a nurse massage therapist and would like to share how you incorporate the two?

Hi, Kia! Welcome.

Heck you are a giant step ahead of 99% of students.  I applaud your decision to study massage therapy.  Hopefully, after you become licensed, you'll be permitted to introduce massage therapy to hospital settings, where it could do so much good.

Re: resources. There is so much available online, and for free.  During my schooling I must have watched 1000 hours of youtube videos.  Erik Dalton offers a  free youtube subscription channel in which he demonstrates techniques he's developed over a lifetime; Walt Fritz demos MFR techniques; then there's a fine therapist who posts videos using the nym "Massagenerd.".  And we can't forget the webinars provided free to its members by ABMP.

Lastly, this is a very useful website: http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps.  I'm sure you know your anatomy already, but we can all use refreshers, right?

Pay attention when you get into NMT class, which attempts to teach one how to find and treat trigger points.  The sad fact is that less than 40% of massage therapists can find one with a roadmap--and even the AMA admits that trigger points are the cause of almost all neuromuscular pain.

Again, welcome to our world.

Yes 1 good tip or two is what ever cd's you have use them well and veiw as many massage sites you can. one good one is massageneard.com is a very good one.

First week school down. I am loving it. I need to work on my water intake and stretching. I also need to work on body mechanics

Hi Kia!  Congrats on taking the plunge into massage therapy! Happy to hear you are loving it so far.  Don't forget to take care of yourself in the meantime.  As you progress through the program I'm sure you'll start to realize just how important those body mechanics can be.  It took me a good couple months to really get it ingrained into my head but it is definitely best to start creating those GOOD habits.  I am 6 months into my program and still find myself slacking in this area every now and then. As I practice, I have started putting a full length mirror in my treatment room so I can watch my own body mechanics and correct them ASAP.  Have fun and good luck!!
