Hey Mike- Here is the recipe that I am working with, It took some experimenting..

6oz of Cocoa butter
2.5 oz of Shea butter
10 oz of coconut oil
1.5 cups of jojoba oil
1 1/4 cups of almond oil
1 cup of calendula oil ( I infuse 1/2 cup of calendula flowers in 24oz of jojoba/almond oil blend for 2 weeks)
2oz bees wax
Vit E
12 oz of filtered or distilled water. mixed with 1/4 tsp of Borax

Its like making a salad dressing really... you blend all oils and melt them in a stainless steel pot on low heat. in the meantime make the water/borax blend (that thickens the lotion)
When all melted use a mixer to blend oil and water.
The trick for keeping the oil and water from separating is blending it for a long time! 1/2 hr at least
Make sure all tools and clean and sterile. Takes about 45 min to make.
Makes about 45oz of nice creamy perfect massage lotion. It is rather greasy, if using as a moisturizer you might want to rub it in more than reg lotion.
I add aromatherapy later, cuz I like to keep unscented lotion handy as well for the sensitive people. the type of oils can be easily changed if some one is allergic to almond oil or other oils.

If you try it, Let me know how it goes!

Just got a message from Travis Alligood- He has a client who is allergic to Aromatherapy and any other oils and was asking for suggestions. here is my reply- Any other ideas out there?

"Dear Travis-Wow, that’s a tough one!
Is the client allergic to ALL oils? Hour about butters like cocoa or Shea?
I know that Kiss My Face makes an oil free/fragrance free lotion, but I am not sure how it will be to work with, and how natural it is.
I found a great web site though when i googled "oil free lotion" and they use "A blend of Organic Aloe Vera Gel, Vegetable Glycerin, Witch Hazel & Rosemary and Green Tea Extract, Soy Protein, Kelp Powder, Sorbitol (a sugar like material derived from Mountain berry ash), Vitamin A and C. Co Q10 natural enzyme (Derived from yeast), and Distilled Water." (Copied it from their ingredients list) again not sure how effective it is, you might have to apply quite a lot.
this is the web site link:

The cream above is on this page:

I am going to post your question on our group page and see if anyone else has some ideas.
My other suggestion is to do an "oilless" massage where you can apply finger and palm pressure more like chair massage style or Shiatsu, while you work through the sheet or clients keep their cloths on.

And lasly why don't you try Mike's idea of baby or baking powder? I think they add some additives that may be allergenic, you can check it out. Good luck!

Hi Eeris,

I would love to hear about your recipe!

I haven't made any of my own massage lotion, but am always interested in natural and preservative free products. One of the top organic skincare companies in the U.K., Japan, and Dubai, will be launching a direct selling channel in the U.S. in September -- NYR Organic. The wonderful products are made using wild-harvested and organic plants and herbs with no artificial chemicals. The massage oils are skin-nourishing and each contains an uplifting aromatherapy blend of pure essential oils. Send me a note if you'd like to receive a pdf version of the catalog or if you'd like any additional information.

Hey Mike, baking and baby powders take me back to my grandma... I forgot all about that! Yea that will not be my first choice either...
I wish that making lotion will be that simple though...
I try to use only natural ingredients following the ayrovedic idea: "if you can't eat it why put it on your skin?" so i am combining shea butter coconut oil, cocoa butter, bees wax, almond, jojoba, calendula, vit E oils. Though because of luck of preservatives the shelf life is limited. Was curious if other people experiment with making lotion and what worked for them.

Hi Eeris - thanks for the invite. This area really doesn't get enough attention. I read somewhere a few years back about using Baking powder if you ran out of lotion. Well sure enough, I found myself in the perfect setting without lotion. But there was baby powder. Well the client was a few shades lighter, but it really worked. I had too be careful not to use too much, but it got me wondering what other products might work. I wouldn't use it as my first choice, but it worked. So tell me about your natural lotions.

Hello, I have been making my own massage lotion for about 2 years. After a lot of experimenting I finally found a recipe that works for me, but would love to get some more ideas and find out about good places to buy the materials in bulk.
What are other people's experince with lotions that are preservative free?
