Deeply Considering MT Education * Need Advice *

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to gauge how other people in this profession are doing financially in the NJ / PA / DE area. I've done hours of research so far and it's hard to really extract a concise truth about income from MT from other websites. For example, people in Michigan have very unsavry things to say about making a living from doing it and then other professionals in San Fransisco are saying their practice is booming. The difference between those locations makes it understandable why some are sinking and some are swimming. In this industry location can mean everything to your salary.

Can any of you give me insight into the beginning of your careers and how easy or difficult it was to establish yourself? What kind of wages were you earning? What kind of setting were you working in? Has anyone attended Rizzieri School for the Healing Arts? How would you rate their MT program?

I will be meeting with a recruiter soon and I know that they will only have great things to say about their program and my future which is fine; but I need to hear the truth from professionals in my area who have had to deal with the hard knocks that come with the territory. Naturally I feel some trepidation after reading so many other people's posts saying 'DONT DO IT' because I really want to make this my career.

I really appreciate any and all advice each of you could share with me. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Alexis

It might be better to approach this from a research perspective. What are the venues for massage in your area? Which suits you? How much is being charged for massage and how many could you realistically do in a day/week? Are the places in your area hiring (it is often good to get experience working for someone else to get started)? Can you live on what they pay while getting started? If going on your own figure what you need to be making to get by in a month and divide that by what you can charge per massage. That gives you how many massages you must do per month. Multiple that by 5 and it gives an idea how many "regular" clients you need for a base. Be sure to calculate in your expenses.

If you really love the massage/bodywork business, whatever venue, just go for it. It is always best to be in a career you love. You will do better and be happier.
