Okay, as massage therapists we are in an incredible postion because we are in the wellness industry. I have just finished listening to an excerpt from the book, "The Next Trillion" by Paul Zane Pilzner. Pilzner explains why the wellness industry will exceed $1 trillion by the year 2010. Basically the premise is that clients that start to look and feel better will start to consume more products and services that help them to feel even better.
The wellness industry is going to expand exponentially because people who try out pilates, or massage or supplements are going to want to get recommendations from their wellness providers on what to do next. So as massage professionals it only makes sense that we network with other people in the wellness community who can further the work that we do with massage. Perhaps those with whom we network, will give us a thumbs up recommendation to their clients. Or we can also start to build into our existing practices more opportunities for growth.
Personally I have expanded my massage practice to include work with digestive and reproductive healthcare. I have gone through continuing education as to be a nutritional therapist and work with a Doctor to interpret bloodwork or DNA tests in order to create customized health solutions for each clients. I follow up the work with abdominal massage and often refer people to seek out hydrocolon therapy for digestive distress, or pilates for reproductive muscle conditioning. As a massage therapist, I feel good knowing that we are in field that is expanding!
