I am not aware of your locations economic situation; I would look at perception based on direction. It is always difficult to give sound advice in business today. I would like to think the more people, organizations, businesses, weekend city events, weekend athletic events and other opportunities are always the best way to keep me positive.

Everyone is seeking to find out what we can do better, different or how to make things work in this environment. All we can do is keep our chin up and keep our ideas fresh and continue to network. I wish you the best and I look forward hearing back from you on my input.

Having beein in this field for many years I learned that there is a cycle that is happening, sometimes it depends on the seasons ( Summer and holidays are slower) and sometimes it depends on my personal life- if i am too busy and stressed it will suddenly slow down for me...
Do not get dishcourged- the flow will change. If you are experiencing a slow period- offer some specials (buy one get one 1/2 price, or 90 min for the price of 75 min etc)
I found that people really like specials and go for it.

Hi Amanda - I run my life based on two philosophies. I have studied people over 5 decades and those that I have seen that were successful to themselves and the public shared these ideas.

The first is, The Bridge Builder, which makes me do for others first.

Second is The Ant Philosophy, by Jim Rohn. This keeps me going when it gets tough.

"Over the years I've been teaching children about a simple but powerful concept - the ant philosophy. I think everybody should study ants. They have an amazing four-part philosophy, and here is the first part: ants never quit.

That's a good philosophy. If they're headed somewhere and you try to stop them; they'll look for another way. They'll climb over, they'll climb under, they'll climb around. They keep looking for another way.

What a neat philosophy, to never quit looking for a way to get where you're supposed to go.

Second, ants think winter all summer. That's an important perspective. You can't be so naive as to think summer will last forever. So ants are gathering in their winter food in the middle of summer.

An ancient story says, "Don't build your house on the sand in the summer." Why do we need that advice? Because it is important to be realistic.

In the summer, you've got to think storm. You've got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun. Think ahead.

The third part of the ant philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, "This won't last long; we'll soon be out of here." And the first warm day, the ants are out.

If it turns cold again, they'll dive back down, but then they come out the first warm day. They can't wait to get out.

And here's the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All that he possibly can. What an incredible philosophy, the "all-that-you-possibly-can" philosophy.

Wow, what a great seminar to attend - the ant seminar. Never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all you can.

Amanda, I hope they will help you. It really is as simple as these two concepts! At least for me... Best Wishes, Keep the Faith!

Hi Amanda,

The first rule of staying motivated is to be doing what you love to do. A person who loves their work, in essence, never works a day in their life. Am I truly doing the work I was meant to be doing? Am I happy when I give a massage?
Second - write down, here or in a journal, what are the thoughts, feelings, situations, people, experiences that are discouraging you???
Third - be honest, with yourself first - are your skills basic? do you communicate well with others? Do you dress professionaly and maintain your health in a role model fashion? do you provide the best of everything for your clients or do surround them with equipment, sheets, lotions etc.. that say "I am just gettin by"?,
Fourth - here is a big one - are your thoughts and word joyfull, encouraging and inspiring throughout the day especially while giving a massage or do you fall in to a poor me pattern.
Fifth - you can't be flaky (a reputation massage therapists are still trying to change) You have to get on the job well before your clients and be ready to give them 2 sessions worth of energy in 1 session! Then - they will do all the marketing for you! You can't bounce around between locations - find a good location and stick with it!!!
After addressing these issues the bussiness of doing bussiness comes down to knowing your clients (market deomgraphics) having a correct safe and suitable location to practise.
