The Recession Is "Officially" Over!!! How Will Your Business Change?
Loaded question huh? Most folks are looking around for the jobs! GDP has grown. We still will see a lag in the economy. I think we are moving forward. The stock market is growing. If we can get the banks to lend again, people will expand their business. I think folks will continue to save their money and make sure before they start growth and expansion, again.

It has seemed that my area was fairly insulated from the recession. We had some major corps. go down like Circuit City, but many businesses hung in there and my business continues to grow. However, now that the recession is "officially" over, I'm beginning to see closed signs in shop windows. I feel the small businesses were doing what they could to survive and finally hit that critical point where they just couldn't float anymore.
It could be I psychological response of the owners. They struggle out of determination when things are bad. When they are told that we are through the tunnel and things are better, they look around and see how bad things still are. If things are supposed to be better, why does my own business still stuck in the bog. Frustration sets in and they give up.
Now is the time to be more tenacious than ever. We are told the recession is over for the same reason it took government over a year to admit we were in a recession. I believe they are saying it hoping saying it will make it so. As Mike has said, keep breathing. Expect recovery to take as long as the recession itself.
Keep on keeping on brothers and sisters. We see the light at the end of the tunnel, but there is still work to do. The good news is many of us are still seeing positive growth in our business. I know other therapists in my area who are solidly booked. Keep doing what you do well and stay focussed. This is no time to give up.

Well, expansion, in a form, is now on! Sooner than I expected. Since my original reply, I have now decided to stop working as an IC at the PT company. I will be taking that day and opening it up at my shop. It will be a nice change of pace to completely dedicate my energies to one location.

Since I primarily teach continuing education I didn't see a huge set back because therapist needed their Ce's! Most therapist were saying their business was down a bit tho. However, I did notice that it didn't seem to hurt people wanting to sign up and attend my Retreat style trainings in Hawaii. Hmmm?? I think what really happened this year,... people were paying more attention to where they were spending their money . Priorities seemed to have changed.
My husband (and son in law) also felt it, being in construction/remodeling. Like Laura's husband, business has been extremely slow and he has been out of work most of the year. A little up swing just recently, but not much yet.
People are also looking for "deals" and want the work done cheaply because they know these guys are hurting for work.
Recession over??? I am not sure about that as I have many friends and family out of work, laid off and not able to find work yet. My son was laid off from Verizon after years and no jobs anywhere in Florida for him. No one is hiring. He moved his family back to NJ thinking it would be better about 2 months ago. It was worse. They moved back to Florida because unemployment wages wouldn't support NJ economy. Now he has to look into schooling.
I do hope that is true and things pick up for everyone soon. I feel this year has taught many of us to be resourceful, grateful and inventive on how to survive. Not a bad thing really.
I'm thinking positive for 2010!!!

I'm actually extremely happy with my business depsite the economic downturn. I had several regular clients that asked how things were just for security, I think, and was glad I was able to tell them I was doing fine and planned to be here all year and now 2010 is around the corner.
Not only did I maintain all my regulars, but I managed to pick up three new regulars along with the usual amount of one-session guests.
My hopes are high as things do turn around and I'm looking forward to the growth especially since my kids are getting big enough I can focus on it more. Just writing about it is making me excited!

Just moved to a larger space with waiting and treatment rooms from a location in which I started my business December 2008. I expanded my clientele and income from January through October. I am still above my average monthly income in November with 2 days for marketing events (no income) and 2 days off for Thanksgiving.
